This is a career fair for graduates leaving University or higher learning institutions in New York City. A program made particularly to help or provide graduates with information such as career advice, job market, requirements and how to apply for jobs, etc. It was started and funded courtesy of concerned leaders from the ministry of education as well as Universities and higher learning institutions in New York City. The main reason as to why the program was started was to find both a short-term and long-term solution to the ever rising unemployment rate in the city and even the country at large, despite being already educated and ready for the job market.
Upon realization that it was due to lack of information that young men and ladies either joined the wrong career or went seek jobs in the wrong places, making them not to enjoy their jobs or not g
...et hired at all, few leaders from Universities proposed the idea of starting this program. It received a positive reception from other Universities, the public and the government, especially the education ministry. The event is now an annual event that is hosted at City Hall every year, but due to rising number of attendees yearly, the organizers might be forced to change the venue in the coming years.
To provide world class information and career advice as well as basic information on the job market to graduating, so as to support individual transformation, innovation, and sustainable global development.
Objectives:
- To create, enable and increase cooperation where they already existed, between both Universities and higher learning institutions and the market in New York City.
- To promote career development and sustainable
growth among the youth.
There is a slow but steady rise of graduates in the New York City, and it is for this reason that I decided to focus and base my research on both primary and secondary research so as to obtain sufficient information on the same. The career fair program was started with the aim of bettering the lives of graduates in several Universities and higher learning institutions, but due to the positive feedback that was a result of the program, the target market has slowly been changing and increasing within the years.
Some of the target markets include:
- Freshly graduated students from all universities and higher learning institutions in New York City. These are the initial reason for the creation of this program; it was meant to
expose them job opportunities and also provide for them more career advice.
The New York City foundation planning to host a new and improved career fair for the fourth year running, with the aim of obtaining good results from the event and making it even better. Here is the New York City foundation’s SWOT analysis:
- Strength: The foundation is well-known and has a good reputation both locally and internationally, having hosted almost a handful of similar events that produced positive results.
- Weaknesses: As much as there are local or native students who attend the event and benefit from it, there is quite a number of them that might not be
interested in settling or working in New York City or the USA at large, and would rather go back to seek opportunities in their native countries.
PESTEL Model Analysis
This involves an analysis of the political, economic, social and technological factors in the external environment of an organization which affects its activities and performance (Jurevicius, 2013).
- Political Analysis: The New York City foundation faces challenges, especially when it comes to education laws, the fact that the government does not give equal rights and priorities to international students means that as soon as they complete their education, they go and seek jobs elsewhere they have a better chance.
- Economic factors: The foundation gives sufficient knowledge to graduates, enough to give them a desirable job, but some still end up jobless because of the lack of opportunities. The government only cannot be able to provide employment for everyone, and that’s where the private sector has to come in and support sustainable growth of the economy by employing graduates, (Ramaswamy & Namakumari, 2009).
- Social factors: The New York City Foundation seeks to help graduates voluntarily, but cannot help them if they are not willing to be helped. Some graduates, especially those with a negative attitude
end up not gaining from such a program. This, in turn, adds to the failure or downfall of such foundations.
The New York City foundation is aimed at becoming the world’s leading career fair in New York City, the USA and all over the world. It provides free services graduates and students from New York City, but charge a small ticket fee for those from other cities, states, and countries. This is a goal that has been set to be achieved in a period of about 20 to 25 years within this period, provide quality services to the residents of New York and the USA at large.
The New York Foundation career fair has the following approaches to pricing, promotion, and advertisements, distribution and customer service, towards the achievement of its goals.
- Pricing: The pricing scheme is based on charging a small entrance fee for students who are not New City residents, and totally free for those who are residents. There will also be a discount for the first fifty people to get to the venue.
- Distribution: The services offered by the organization will be well distributed to all participants during the event.
- Advertisements and Promotions: There will be several different methods for promotion and advertisement ranging from burners, flyers, newspaper advertisements, television and radio advertisements, social media, etc, (Abrams, 2003)
A quick reminder of the objectives:
- Create, enable and increase cooperation where they already existed, between both Universities and higher learning institutions and the market in New York City.
- Promotion of career development and sustainable growth among the youth.
- Create an avenue that increases the chance for fresh graduates to find jobs that are good for them and satisfy their individual ambitions.
- Reduce the unemployment rate by creating avenues that expose the graduates to potential opportunities all over the country and the world at large.
- Increase the reputations of Universities based in New York City as reliable sources for providing quality education and producing graduates that are well-trained and ready for the job market.
- Eradicate poverty by ensuring that graduates don’t entirely depend on being employed, but rather also look at the available options creating self-employment.
- Encourage innovation among the graduates and the youth at large, which will, in turn, raise living standards and eradicate poverty.
- Create change to the society and encourage the creation of programs with similar or even improved goals in New York City and the world.
