Person Centred Approach in Counselling

Person Centered approach is a counseling therapy developed by Carl Rogers in the 1940s, and this approach was pioneered by the non-directive counseling approach which focused on here and now principle. Non-directive approach encouraged clients to find out and make change on their own. However, person centered approach mostly focuses on personal relationship between the counselor and the client he / she is attending to. Person centered approach operates by developing trust and a common understanding between the counselor and the client, and all these ensures self-realization, in addition, it makes the client to realize the problems and issues he / she should disclose to the counselor, find solution with a little encouragement and moral support from the counselor (Mearns, 2003).

The key objective of any counseling process or therapy is to relieve client from any form of mental and emotional distress, mental confusion, in addition, the main objective of person centered approach is to provide the client with an opportunity to be more self-aware and be in control towards creating positive changes they wish to. listening, questioning skills, reflecting of feeling and content, client observation skills and providing client feedback would assist in effective communication in the counseling process. To begin with, active listening is sententious in the counseling process and it entails fully concentrating to what is being said, both the counselor and client need to listen to each other carefully rather than just passively hearing the message, and it entails listening with all senses. Secondly, we have question skills, and in these counseling skills, the counselor can ask open or close questions. Open questions often make the client provide full and more meaningful responses by encouraging the client to take a greater length. On the other hand, closed questions can be used when the counselors need to get very specific information from the client and get right response from them (Van, 2008).

Reflecting skills is also important during counseling process, and it is usually used as an intervention to help stimulate clients to explore their thoughts and feelings associated with the problems being experienced. These questions are crucial since they help the client to be more critical in their thinking as they answer the questions. Attending skills and eye contact are other two main counseling skills, and through all these skills, client is able to receive unconditional positive regard, empathy and genuineness which encourage counseling relationship between the counselor and the client.
