I’m currently living in Irvington, New Jersey. I would describe my hometown as an urban, multicultural, middle class community. Irvington is in the county of Essex. It contains an estimated of 54,233 people since the 2018 census report. Most of the city consist of African Americans, but we do have several Latinos/Hispanics. However, Irvington continues to grow. The racial make-up is 86.8% Black or African American, White 2.1% and Hispanic or Latino 9.6%. In addition, the city has a mixture of working-class people and low-income individuals. Furthermore, there are numerous resources around to help us now. Many years ago, it was uncommon to find places for help however, currently we have local social services and other similar resources. Education has become a big part of my community. In my community we have seven elementary schools.

One Preschool, two middle schools, and one high school that serves 1,198 students grades 9-12. In addition, we have one private school that is Christian based, that offers a wide variety of different programs to suit each student. We also have several head start programs within my community that offers different programs to children of all ages. Last but not least we have the local fire and police department, hospital and social service offices that are available anytime. The health department serves everyone in the community from new born to the seniors’ offer a wide variety of services here for those who reside here in Irvington such as Irvington planned parenthood, WIC, programs for women with illness such as cancer, free STD testing at certain times, HIV, free vaccines such as flu shots. these services and others as well because if you don’t have insurance, like many people in my area, you can receive these services for free or little to no cost. In addition, the local services offices you can apply for benefits such as heating, SNAP, Medicaid and Medicare. Also, if tragedy occurs, an estimate of 29 churches provides help to families in need of a dire situation with food clothing and housing and many other benefits.

Social Service Agencies

There are several mental health care facilities and agencies located in my community. One of these is the New Hope Behavioral Health Center. The NHBHC provides mental health services, substance abuse, rehab and crisis intervention. Their treatment approaches include Cognitive/behavioral therapy, Dialectical therapy, Substance abuse, counseling approach and Rational emotive behavioral therapy. They offer programs such as group counseling, 12 step facilitation, anger management etc. They also provide treatment to the mental health and addiction population adult ages 18 to 65;adults who suffer from various psychiatric disorders.NHBHC also employs social workers as case managers, and housing. Secondly, Irvington Jewish Federation towers provides services to senior residents. It is a 134-unit apartment building for independent seniors. The building, which opened in 1982, is subsidized by HUD for seniors and the disabled who qualify. The Service Package at Jewish Federation Towers includes: Housekeeping, meals and personal care services available by arrangement Transportation to cultural and community events and shopping In addition, a full range of social programs and recreational activities on-site, access to a Social worker and Nurse-practitioner, emergency response system for each resident 24 hours a day / 7 days a week. In addition, we also have a department

of Child Care Services that help to improve not only the quality life of a child but their environment as well. It deals with psychological functioning of children and their families, removing a child from foster care, removing from a child abusive home due to neglect or abuse. It serves child from birth.
