They are as good as you: Why LGBT community needs more attention fast! Essay Example
From politicians, celebrities, and the government, the LGBT community has been on the frontline of discrimination and intolerance in the last few years. A renowned American singer (Beyonce Knowles) is reported to have ignored her fans because they were LGBT (Maza). From marriage rights, health and violence to empowerment, LGBT have decided that “no pain no gain” and are firing back at the society to make sure that they are acknowledged.
Remember the time when gay men were thrown off building tops and tortured by unknown activists in the Middle East? Or better yet, when the late Charlie Howard was drowned by three teenagers for holding hands with his partner Roy Ogden while walking down the street? Talk about bullying!!! Trans people have been on the receiving end for a long time now. Transgender people m
...urdered?? Ehhh… so what?? This is what a normal person would think. Wait a minute…. not so many Americans understand how problematic this issue is today.
Therefore, after 60 years of being a man and later transforming to a woman, Caitlyn Jenner opens up on just how much it sucked not to be acknowledged as a member of the LGBT community. “You go through all this stuff, and you start learning kind of the pressure that women are under all the time about their appearance,” she says (Boardman). Caitlyn Jenner, previously known as Bruce Jenner is on the frontline of such efforts to raise awareness among the public and bring visibility to the LGBT community. She has been involved in a number of awareness programs and is now a known television personality… “Way to go Cait!!” In the United States, both the
police and government officials have failed in their responsibility to prevent the prosecution of homophobic violence against LGBT people.
As a result, there are increasing instances of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons being harassed and attacked across the nation in the prelude and aftermath of the implementation of the government’s LGBT policies in a variety of states. Such a law should successfully prohibit the discrimination, torture and harassment of LGBT people in the society and prevent them from being cast out as second-class citizens (BuzzFeed Community). Today, an estimated 40% of youth on the streets are identified as LGBT. What’s more, a staggering 68% of these youths were thrown out on the streets by their families for being lesbians, gays, transgender or bisexual (BuzzFeed Community). In addition to this, another 54% of these youths have at some point been victims of abuse from their family members and relatives (BuzzFeed Community). Such awful experiences leave these young Americans especially susceptible to both physical and psychological health issues.
Many nations across the planet have not yet acknowledged marriage rights to a gay couple. The same issue has now gone global. For instance, according to a survey that was carried out by Australian officials about LGBT community, approximately 60% of transgender males and a whopping 50% of transgender females were found to suffer from depression, a psychological health-related health concern (The Guardian). In Russia, LGBT people are reported to be abducted, humiliated, beaten and branded the name “perverts” in several instances of homophobic violence by vigilante groups in streets, subways, nightclubs and cafes (Human Rights Watch). Gay nightclubs have been invaded, and property vandalized.
In Zimbabwe, about 44 people
running an LGBT organization were arrested and beaten for homophobic reasons (The Guardian). As if it is not enough, a woman was taken into custody by Bangladeshi police for being a lesbian. She had allegedly been raped by the same officers who had arrested her for being a lesbian. The same happened in Egypt where inmates of the LGBT community were assaulted while still in police custody. The empowerment of the transgender community ought to be vital to the progress and attainment of LGBT justice. A majority of transgender people live in severe poverty.
These people are more likely to generate income of below $10,000 every year as compared to heterosexual people (The Guardian). Many of them have attempted to commit suicide in comparison to the general population. They suffer from extreme abuse and consistent discrimination in health institutions, schools; public malls are assaulted, harassed and murdered in cold blood. The LGBT people are just as any other citizen.
They pay their taxes; love their nation and its people. The aspect that revolves around identity and sexual orientation is one that must be addressed further. This means that no more victimization of such people. It is time to take a stand against our brothers and sister from the LGBT community. Let us fight discrimination of these persons the way we fought and triumphed against racism in America.
Acknowledging the LGBT community should be a first. Certainly, a lot of work is needed. Reform is required in law making and protection of sexual minorities.
