Workplace violence is one of the leading causes of deaths and injuries at workplace. It refers to threats of violence or actual violence perpetrated against worker inside or outside the place of work. Although most people associated workplace violence to physical assault, it involves a wide spectrum of other issues. It involves any form of verbal abuse, intimidation, assault or threatening in one’s employments. Verbal abuse, swearing, arguments, sabotage, physical assaults, rumors, expression of anger, rape and murder are examples of common types of workplace violence (AnnMarie, 2013). Workplace violence occurs everywhere, but some workers are at a higher risk than others. These groups of people include social service and healthcare workers, probation officers, psychiatric evaluators and community workers.

that the work place is safe and healthy. Workplace violence being a pervasive vice at workplace, employers should institute various measures to protect their employees (AnnMarie, 2013). However, they should first recognize workplace violence as a serious problem, make it their priority and develop sound responses. They should institute zero-tolerance policies and establish prevention mechanisms to protect their employees. They can provide employees’ with education on how to protect themselves, encourage them to report an form of violence, restrict access to unsafe areas and secure the workplace by installing safety mechanisms such as alarm systems, video surveillance and minimize access of the work premises to limit outside violence (Taylor and Rew, 2011).

set rules and policies and report any violent incident immediately.
Companies can mitigate violence at workplace by developing written policies prohibiting all forms of workplace violence. The written policy should stipulate the acceptable behaviors, measures to be taken in case of violence and channels to be followed when reporting (Taylor and Rew, 2011). Such policies will encourage reporting and show employees of the company’s commitment in protecting them from workplace violence.
