The cause of the triangle is unknown, that's why mystery surrounds its legend. Many people have gone missing while sailing the triangles murky waters. The first known record of the triangle and its eerie mystery comes from Christopher Columbus. He sailed through and around the triangle. malfunction and spin uncontrollably. He wrote and recorded all of this information himself. Luckily the triangle spared Columbus but, because of what he reported we now know that the triangle has been a place of danger and perplexity for hundreds of years.

Many reports and claims did not get the public’s attention until the 20th century. Although, many scholars believe that Shakespeare’s play “The Tempest” was based off some of the mysterious events that occurred at the triangle. But, it didn’t get much attention until a navy ship went missing on the route. It was one of the most famous incidents. It was the disappearance of the USS Cyclops, a navy cargo ship. It happened in March of 1918, its estimated that there were over 300 men on board and tons of cargo. The ship sank in between Barbados and Chesapeake Bay. The ship never sent out an SOS signal, even though they were required to do so in a emergency situation. The ships wreckage was never found and no one survived. President Woodrow Wilson said “Only God and the sea know what happened to the great ship.”

The mystery of the Cyclopes caused shock and belief in the supernatural in America. To make things worse, in 1941 two of the ship’s sister ships vanished in a similar way in the same route. Is the triangle just one big coincidence or is something more sinister the cause? Like Woodrow said, “ only god and the sea know.”

The legend intensified when a pattern was found regarding the triangle. Almost all vessels that would journey in the triangle would disappear or be found abandoned. The people on board would

never be found. Even rescue teams would disappear when searching for missing ships or planes. No one knows why or how. In 1964 a magazine article was written by Vincent Gaddis, he started the term “Bermuda Triangle.” The public began to really get into mystery of the triangle. Scientists, paranormal seekers, and the public all knew about the triangle. People have been trying to find a cause for the triangle for ages. It goes back hundreds of years and has been causing mayhem ever since the first record of it was recorded by Columbus himself.
