The California Condor, a member of the New World vulture family and the largest land bird in North America, resides in various locations including the Grand Canyon area, Zion National Park, coastal mountains of central and southern California, and northern Baja California. Although there have been other fossil species found, it is currently the only surviving species within its genus. The condor features black feathers with white patches beneath its wings and a mostly bald head. Its skin color can vary from yellowish to bright red based on its emotional state.
The condor, with a wingspan of almost 3.0 meters and weighing up to 29 lbs, holds the record for having the largest wingspan among all North American birds and is also the heaviest. It is a scavenger that consumes significant amounts of carrion. This bird species has a reputation as on
...e of the longest-living worldwide, living up to 60 years. Unfortunately, in the 20th century, condor populations experienced a dramatic decline due to activities such as poaching, lead poisoning, and habitat destruction.
To address this decline, the United States government implemented a conservation plan in 1987 which involved capturing the remaining 22 wild condors. These surviving birds were then bred at the San Diego Wild Animal Park and the Los Angeles Zoo.
Numbers of the California Condor have increased through captive breeding and since 1991, condors have been released back into the wild. This project is the most costly conservation effort ever done in the United States. The California Condor is one of the world's scarcest avian species. As of April 2011, there are a total of 394 known condors living, among which 181 are in their
natural habitat. The condor holds great significance for various Native American tribes in California and plays a crucial part in many of their traditional legends.
