One of my acquaintances claimed to be "living the Dream," but didn't define what this meant. For him, it could have involved enjoying a relaxed lifestyle at the beach, spending time with women all night long, and not having any worries. Even though his definition of the Dream was subjective, he believed he was living it. The American Dream is unique for each person as we all have different perspectives and adhere to distinct values. This is the beauty of residing in our country; everyone can experience the "American Dream," including my father and Tiger Woods, who may have vastly dissimilar aspirations.
According to some, achieving the American Dream requires success. Because success can be defined in many ways, it is an appropriate component of the American Dream. Hochschild quotes Bill Clinton in her essay "The American Dream" stating t
...hat if you work hard and abide by the rules, your innate abilities will take you as far as possible (Hochschild pg 5). While Clinton may have engaged in questionable activities during his tenure, this statement accurately captures the essence of the American Dream.
The term "God-given ability" is appreciated as it reflects the idea that people tend to follow careers that align with their natural talents and skills. For instance, musical prodigies often become musicians, while those who excel in math may pursue a career in finance or mathematics. The success of a musician is not necessarily measured by financial gain but rather by the satisfaction of impacting people's lives through music. As someone who admires music and musicians, The Disco Biscuits are being highlighted as my favorite band that embodies the American Dream. This band comprises
four college-educated members who attended UPenn for about two years.
The Disco Biscuits, also known as "Bisco," were initially a Phish tribute group, paying homage to the popular 90's jam band. In the late 90's, they kicked off their career at UPenn's frat houses and nearby colleges like Drexel and St. Joes. Despite having a modest fan base, they had a devoted following.
Instead of seeking profit or prestigious venues, the band's success was driven by their passion for music and loyal fan base. Their popularity grew organically through word of mouth in the early 2000s, leading to larger shows in bigger venues. By New Year's Eve 2005, they had transformed from a cover band into an established group with devoted followers. Their sold-out performance at an 8,000-person theater held significant significance for this small yet influential band.
Following their final song, the keyboardist grabbed the microphone and proclaimed, "This evening validates my career." This may have been when he recognized that he had accomplished his American Dream. All of the band members had devoted themselves to this objective from a young age, taking a risk in an unyielding field by refining their musical abilities instead of prioritizing academics. The gamble paid off, bringing to fruition a dream that some may have harbored since John "Barber" Gutwilig first picked up a guitar at 10 years old.
Despite the fact that numerous individuals or groups have accomplished greater feats in music and life, I believe that this band, which has served as a source of inspiration for many, including myself, embodies the epitome of realizing the "American Dream".
