Decisions, Decisions Life is all about decisions. No matter how big or small, those decisions will affect the direction of one’s life. However, decisions, especially important ones, must be well thought out, otherwise, regret and/or sorrow will follow. There is no going back on already made decisions and there is no “fixing” them either. Teenagers are known to make dumb decisions. Fortunately, independent decision making is all a part of growing up. However, as a teenager, it seems hopeless sometimes and I question if the decisions I make are the right ones.

After reading The 6 Most Important Decisions You’ll Ever Make I think I have taken a step in the right direction. The six major points in the novel: friends, school, parents, addictions, dating and sex, and your

self seemed logical and they helped to alter my view on life and the decisions I will have to make in the future. Overall, friends are one of the most important things to teenagers, and humans of all ages. Whether we have many good friends or a select few close friends, they help us get through the day. When contemplating what types of friends I would choose, I had an epiphany of sorts.

As cliche as it sounds, we don’t choose whom we love. It just happens. The same applies for friend, as well. I found two amazing friends in the most unlikely of places. I believe that trying to find what kind of friend is good for you is pointless. Rather, I think that more focus should be put on what kind of friend you will be because that decision determines what kind of friends you make. I

addition, school is an important decision because it determines each person’s resolve. Not to sound cocky or anything, but I have been told that I am a brilliant young man. However, my grades often do not reflect that.

The worst part is, I know that I am capable of so much more. After reading The 6 Most Important Decisions You’ll Ever Make and reflecting on my academic path, I have realized that I am getting in my own way. Granted, I knew this before, but I naively chose to ignore it, thinking that everything would work out in the end. A lot of my future weighs on my performance at school, and it wasn’t until after I read this book this summer that the apple finally fell on my head. So what am I going to do about my education? Light a fire under my butt and get serious before I get left behind. My parents don’t understand me. ” Although paraphrased, that is a common thought among most teenagers. We are at the stage where we think we can take on the world without anyone’s help, and although our parents are just trying to help, they may either “baby” us or get in our way. Respect for your elders and parents is one of the first things children in my culture are taught. We may disagree, they may not understand, and I may be wrong at times, but no matter what, that respect is still there. I’m a mama’s boy and I’m damn proud of it. My father’s distant, but he’s just a dad. Are they perfect? No.

Do I want them to be? Of course

not because then I would never get away with anything. All jokes aside, when I thought about if I can get along with my parents, I smiled because I knew the answer was a definite yes. Addiction was by far the easiest major point to ponder. Before we even hit high school, we are constantly reminded to say no to drugs and to not give in to peer pressure; to stay above the influence. There have been many campaigns to prevent addiction. I know what drugs and alcohol can do to people. I have seen it first hand and I realize how quickly things can spiral out of someone’s control.

However, I have also seen addiction managed by force of will alone. Still, addiction is powerful, and no matter what way you look at it, self-control is the only way to stave off against it. At this point of my life, hormones are the bane of my existence. On that note, dating and sex are not the easiest things to avoid as a teenager. Sex is everywhere, whether it is subliminal or obvious. Our society almost always has sex on the mind and it is even exploited in the media. However, many people make dumb mistakes because they don’t bother to know the full facts about sex and dating. Or many just choose to ignore what they know.

Sex is the most uncomfortable subject a parent can discuss with their children. However, it is necessary to know how it works. That way, when children become teenagers they don’t jump straight into it and make mistakes and regret like some are prone to. In terms of dating, though,

who you will date and what you will do about sex is a very important matter, yet if you make good decisions, you can muddle through somehow. The most important major point of this book I think is the self. Every choice that is made somehow reflects one’s self. Every generation and every individual faces challenges that they must overcome.

Without knowledge of oneself, it would be impossible to do so. That is why, regardless of what people think or of how they respond, the most important thing in life is to be true to yourself. The 6 Most Important Decisions You’ll Ever Make has really opened my eyes. It has helped me to realize that I have made mistakes, but they can be fixed. All I have to do is to make wiser decisions in the future. I realize that I am a work in progress and I will continue to make mistakes, but if I actually think about what I’m doing and how it will affect me, I should fare pretty well in the future.
