What is Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale?
The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) is an individually administered intelligence test used to assess the cognitive abilities of adults and older adolescents. It was developed by psychologist David Wechsler in 1955 as a revision of the earlier Wechsler-Bellevue intelligence test. It has since been revised several times, with the most recent version being released in 2008. The WAIS is composed of 10 core subtests that measure a variety of cognitive abilities including verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory, and processing speed. It also includes four supplemental subtests which measure additional cognitive functions such as short-term memory and problem solving ability. The results from these tests are used to generate an IQ score which can be compared to average performance for different age groups Additionally, the WAIS can be used to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses in individual’s intellectual functioning in order to inform assessment and intervention strategies. The scores from each subtest are combined into three distinct indices: Verbal Comprehension Index (VCI), Perceptual Reasoning Index (PRI), and Working Memory Index (WMI). These indices provide a more nuanced understanding of individual’s intelligence than just their overall IQ score. Overall, the WAIS is widely accepted as a valid tool for assessing adult cognitive ability across multiple domains.
