What is Surgical Technology?
Surgical technology is a field of medicine dedicated to providing support and assistance to surgeons in the operating room. This includes preparing the patient for surgery, setting up and maintaining sterile conditions, monitoring vital signs during surgery, passing instruments to the surgeon, and helping with closing incisions. Surgical technologists are trained professionals who have knowledge of anatomy, physiology, surgical techniques and procedures. They understand medical terminology and equipment used in the operating room as well as infection control procedures.A career in surgical technology can be very rewarding. It offers an opportunity to work closely with surgeons as they perform life-saving operations on patients. It also allows technologists to expand their understanding of medical procedures while working in a fast-paced environment that is constantly changing due to technological advancements in medicine. Working as a surgical technologist requires strong organizational skills such as attention to detail and problem solving abilities. The ability to adapt quickly is also essential since different situations can arise during each procedure performed by the surgeon. The educational requirements for becoming a surgical technologist vary from state-to-state but most require at least an associate degree or certification program from an accredited school or college that focuses on courses related to surgical technology such as anatomy & physiology, microbiology & infection control, pharmacology & medication administration, instrumentation & supplies set up/breakdown/sterilization techniques; patient assessment pre/post operation; anesthesia awareness/techniques; wound closure/suturing skills; operating room safety practices; etc In some states like California there may also be additional certifications required after completing an accredited program before being authorized for employment in certain settings like ambulatory surgery centers (ASC). Overall becoming a certified surgical tech can open many doors when it comes to career opportunities within healthcare facilities all over the world.
