What is Slavery?
Slavery is one of the darkest periods in human history. It was a system whereby people were treated as property, bought and sold and forced to work without pay for their entire lives. This practice was common in many parts of the world for centuries, but it reached its peak during the Atlantic slave trade in the 16th-19th centuries. During this period, millions of African people were forcibly taken from their homes and transported to the Americas to be used as free labor on plantations. The cruelties they suffered while enslaved are nothing short of horrific, and they have left a deep mark on humanity’s conscience even today. The effects of slavery still reverberate through society today. Many countries with histories of slavery still struggle with racism and inequality due to its legacy. In addition, many formerly enslaved people remain struggling financially due to limited access to education or opportunities for advancement long after emancipation was declared. Further, there are still millions of people around the world enslaved in various forms of servitudeincluding domestic servants, forced laborers, sex workers, and child soldiersand these victims continue facing immense suffering every day without proper recognition or protection by law enforcement or government institutions. It is important that we remember all those who experienced enslavement throughout history so we can learn from it and ensure such atrocities never happen again. We must seek justice for those who endured slavery and make sure all individuals are treated fairly regardless of race or gender identity.
