What is Red And White Blood Cells?
Red and white blood cells are vital components of the human body. Red blood cells, or erythrocytes, are responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body. White blood cells, or leukocytes, are part of the immune system and help protect us from infection and disease. Both types of cells have unique characteristics that make them essential to our health. Red blood cells are small disk-shaped cells that contain hemoglobin which binds to oxygen in the lungs and transports it to other parts of the body. Red blood cells also carry carbon dioxide back to the lungs so it can be exhaled from the body. They make up approximately 40-45% of our total volume of blood and their primary role is oxygen transport throughout our bodies. White blood cells, on the other hand, play a key role in our immune system as they help protect us from viruses, bacteria and other foreign invaders by producing antibodies and attacking them directly with specialized proteins known as cytokines. White blood cell counts typically range from 4-11 x 10^9/L (4-11 thousand per microliter) depending on age, gender and health status. Together, red and white blood cells provide essential functions to keep us healthy – red ones transporting oxygen while white ones defend against infection – making them both equally important components of a healthy functioning body.
