What is Islam?
Islam is one of the world’s largest religions, with over 1.6 billion followers across the globe. It is a monotheistic religion that teaches believers to submit and surrender to the will of Allah (God). Muslims believe that Allah revealed his message to Muhammad through revelations, which were written down in the Qur’an. The five pillars of Islam are faith in Allah, prayer, charity, fasting during Ramadan, and making a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a lifetime if possible. The Islamic faith emphasizes strong family values and community responsibility. Muslims strive for harmony between their spiritual life and everyday living by living according to the teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah (example of Prophet Muhammad). Major holidays celebrated by Muslims include Eid al-Fitr at the end of Ramadan, which marks a month-long period of fasting; Eid al-Adha when animals are sacrificed for God; and Hajj when millions make a pilgrimage to Mecca.Muslims also focus on social justice issues such as poverty alleviation, education reform, health initiatives for those in need and environmental protection initiatives. They believe all people should be treated equally regardless of race or religion and seek respect for women’s rights and freedoms while preserving traditional gender roles within families. Additionally they work towards protecting religious freedom around the world even if it means going against popular opinion in society or government policies that could threaten it. Ultimately they strive to promote peace between people through dialogue instead of violence or discrimination based on beliefs or practices different from their own.
