What is Dead Sea Scrolls?

The Dead Sea Scrolls are ancient manuscripts which were discovered in the Qumran Caves near the Dead Sea in 1947. They are considered to be some of the most important archaeological finds of the 20th century. The scrolls, which date from between 150 BCE and 70 CE, include texts from both the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) and other Jewish documents. These documents shed new light on Judaism during the period of Second Temple Judaism, as well as Christianity’s beginnings.The ancient scrolls were found by accident when a Bedouin shepherd boy tossed a rock into a cave and heard something break inside. After further exploration, it was discovered that there were scrolls hidden within jars and clay pots inside several of the caves. A total of 11 caves have been explored since 1947, yielding more than 900 manuscripts composed on parchment (animal skin) as well as papyrus (made from plant fiber). The scrolls provide information about everyday life during Second Temple era such as food consumption, religious practices, marriage customs and much more. They also provide new insight into various biblical texts including The Book of Isaiah which is one of the oldest copies ever discovered; it shows how scripture was preserved throughout generations despite minor variations in language or interpretation over time. Additionally, some non-biblical texts have been uncovered that give us an even deeper understanding of Jewish culture during this time period such as commentaries on rituals and laws along with poetry that reflects popular beliefs at this time; many scholars believe these works offer evidence for early Christianity too.
