What is Concrete Operational Stage?
The Concrete Operational Stage is an important developmental period in a child’s life. It is the third of Jean Piaget’s four stages of cognitive development, spanning from ages 7-11 years. During this stage, children gain the ability to think logically and systematically about concrete events and objects. This period marks a milestone in the development of logical thinking and problem solving skills which are necessary for further learning and success in school. During this period, children acquire the ability to think logically about concrete objects or events using mental operations such as categorization, classification, seriation, conservation, and reversible thinking. They can now understand cause-and-effect relationships between two distinct variables as well as understand how one object can be related to another through relative size or position. Children at this stage also develop better social reasoning skills by being able to recognize different perspectives on a situation or problem. For example, they may be able to recognize that while they are playing a game with their friends there may be rules that not everyone agrees with but still need to be followed in order for the game to work properly. Most importantly during this time children learn how to use abstract thinking when it comes to making decisions and solving problems; however they cannot yet fully comprehend hypothetical situations or abstract concepts such as morality. They are also unable to fully understand hypothetical situations due their limited experience with them; instead they rely heavily on real life experiences when making decisions or solving problems.
