What is Benjamin Franklin?
Benjamin Franklin was an important figure in American history. He was a founding father of the United States, a scientist and inventor, a political leader, and one of America’s first diplomats. He also wrote extensively on many topics including politics, religion, science, and economics. His contributions to the American Revolution were invaluable; his writings helped to shape the ideas behind the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.Franklin was born on January 17th, 1706 in Boston Massachusetts. He had little formal education but he was an avid reader who taught himself many subjects such as mathematics and science through books that he borrowed from friends or got from local libraries. At age twelve he began working as an apprentice at his brother’s printing shop which gave him experience in publishing books and newspapers that helped him later in life when he became a publisher himself. Franklin was very involved in politics during the revolutionary period although he wasn’t always a supporter of independence from Britain; instead he wanted to reconcile with them if possible while still protecting Americans’ rights. In 1776 Franklin traveled to France where he successfully negotiated economic aid for the colonies which helped turn the tide of war in their favor leading to eventual victory against Britain in 1783 making him one of America’s first diplomats abroad. In addition to his political accomplishments Franklin is credited with numerous scientific achievements such as inventing bifocals (eyeglasses with two lenses) developing theories about electricity (the famous kite experiment) and co-authoring studies on meteorology among others. He also wrote much about moral philosophy economic theory as well as other topics like education which led him to become one of America’s most influential thinkers even after his death in 1790 when many people still looked up to him for guidance or inspiration today. Overall Benjamin Franklin was one of America’s most important figures who left behind an indelible mark on our nation’s history through his political actions scientific discoveries literary works and overall impactful presence during his lifetime that continues even now centuries after it ended.
