What is AP United States Government And Politics?
AP United States Government and Politics is an Advanced Placement course offered by the College Board which focuses on the principles and institutions of American government, political processes, policy-making, ideologies, civil rights and liberties. This course enables students to draw connections between current events and historical themes in order to gain a better understanding of how politics has shaped America’s history and culture. By taking this class, students learn core concepts such as constitutional government, federalism, separation of powers, civil liberties, democracy and public opinion. They also explore topics related to executive branch agencies and bureaucracies; congressional legislation; judicial decisions; federalism; economic policies; foreign policy initiatives; state governments’ roles in elections; media influences on politics; racial issues in American society today; international organizations like NATO or UN Security Council resolutions. The AP US Government & Politics course provides a comprehensive overview of these topics with an emphasis on critical thinking skills that will help prepare students for college-level work. Throughout the course there are various opportunities for assessment including multiple choice exams as well as essays designed to assess student knowledge about specific concepts taught throughout the year. In addition to assessments there are numerous activities intended to promote active learning such as debates conducted in class or simulations of legislative sessions where students role play members of Congress debating bills or amendments before voting on them.
