Ancient Greece and Rome have had a lasting influence on Western civilization, especially in the areas of government, philosophy, art, architecture, and literature. Both civilizations were remarkable for their advances in many fields of science and technology. They also shared similar religious beliefs and cultural practices.In terms of government, Ancient Greece was home to city-states that practiced democracy or oligarchy while Ancient Rome was an autocratic republic eventually transitioning into an imperial monarchy. The idea of democracy as represented by Athens during this period had a lasting effect on modern society with citizens having a say in how their government is run. Similarly, Roman law laid out rules for the protection of individuals from oppression which continues to be upheld today through constitutional rights granted by many governments around the world.Philosophers from both societies greatly influenced western thought including Socrates from Ancient Greece who promoted critical thinking through his famous Socratic method along with Plato and Aristotle who are credited with founding philosophical disciplines such as ethics and metaphysics respectively. On the other hand, Roman philosophers like Cicero helped shape political theory while Marcus Aurelius wrote extensively about Stoic philosophy that focused on self-discipline and resilience against adversity. Artistic works created during this time period remain some of our most beloved pieces today with Greek pottery depicting scenes from mythology often adorned in homes while Roman sculptures continue to be revered throughout history due to its realism and attention to detail when it came to representing humans or gods alike like those found at the Parthenon or Colosseum respectively. Architecture too was heavily influenced by these cultures during this era with Corinthian order being one example used for columns seen in temples dedicated to deities like Zeus at Olympia or Jupiter Optimus Maximus near Capitoline Hill in Rome respectively showcasing impressive feats when it comes to engineering prowess at that time period using stone materials as well as wooden beams held together using metal clamps .
