What is Alternative Rna Splicing?
Alternative RNA splicing is a process in which cells produce multiple proteins from the same gene. It occurs when the cellular machinery cuts out introns (non-coding regions) of the pre-mRNA and reassembles the exons (coding regions) in different combinations, allowing for a single gene to code for multiple proteins. In cancerous cells, alternative RNA splicing often leads to changes in cell behavior that allow tumor cells (or their precursors) to evade detection by the immune system or resist chemotherapy drugs. Overall, alternative RNA splicing is an important process that allows cells great flexibility when responding to environmental cues or changes within themselves something that is essential for life on Earth.
