These advances greatly impacted how people communicated with each other and consumed entertainment media. The 1980s was another decade characterized by massive changes both socially and politically for Americans. Ronald Reagan was elected president on a platform that focused heavily on restoring patriotism within American society through strong foreign policy tactics such as his Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI). The introduction of MTV also had an immense impact on popular culture by introducing music videos into mainstream media which would go on to shape future generations’ tastes in music. Politically speaking, this era was dominated by debates concerning issues such as abortion rights and gun control which still remain controversial topics today. Additionally it saw economic growth throughout much of its duration due to Reaganomics policies designed to stimulate business investment throughout America while cutting taxes for many individuals. Fashion trends also changed drastically throughout these two decades with women wearing shoulder pads while men adopted preppy attire such as bow ties or blazers paired with khaki pants or loafers without socks becoming increasingly popular among young adults. In addition , there were also many hairstyles that trended during these eras from afros among African Americans , bobs among women , long hair among hippies , mullets among men , etc. All these styles helped foster individual expression within fashion culture.
