each year. Being on time is not only a duty for students, but also a part of good manners, respect, good reputation, influential, and useful. Tardy all the time to class shows careless and a waste of time.

Therefore, students should use their time wisely and do their best at all times. Tardiness is pretty much not an issue for student these days. It seems to be a 3 normal thing to them. However, the reasons students being tardy can tell whether their student is being committed or not, being peer pressured, and responding to nature calls. * Statement of Problem The problems that will be dealt with in this study or term paper should be briefly stated as: * What is Tardiness? * What are the probable causes that lead students from tardiness? * What are the remedies to stem out or uproot tardiness? What are the effects of tardiness in theacademic performances of the students? * And what would be the resultant productsshould tardiness be uprooted and/or completely eliminated. * Research Objectives -To know the effects of tardiness to the academics of 4th year students of SOLA. -To determine if tardiness could be the one of the root causes of poor student performances.

4 -To discover if tardiness is a cause of behavior problems faced in school. -To figure out the reasons why the 4th year students of SOLA come to school late. -To gather data to help recognize students’ attendance in order to provide programs that ill assist each student to meet higher academic standards. -To prevent the students of SOLA in coming late to school. * Significance of the Study The significance of

this study or term paper to the students is that, students will be able to concentrate in their study and improve their performance as well. For the school, late students is one of the biggest problems of the school that until now cannot be resolved, making it less would give the discipline office a rest. Parents would be satisfied in the improved academics of their child. To the community, it allows districts to gather ata to help recognize student attendance in order to provide programs and services that will encourage students to meet higher academic standards.

5 * Scope and Delimitation of the Study: The study “Tardiness” focuses on the 4th year High School students of School of Our Lady of Atocha. The respondents are the 4th year students of SOLA, 5 students per section, total to 30 individuals, the survey questions will be delimited to obtaining primary and secondary reasons of tardiness as well as assessing related factors underlying therewith. Information acquired and provided by students will be used to confirm or negate he feasible causes which were earlier stated. The result of the survey will then contribute insight in planning and drafting of the solutions in addressing the said problems being indentified that needs appropriate action. * Definition of Terms Late: After the usual or expected time; missing time over the course of a school day 6 Discipline Office: Its duties are to hear the students charge and recommend the necessary action to be taken. Punctuality: The characteristic of being able to complete a required task or fulfill an obligation before or at a previously designated time.

Tardy/Tardiness: Being late for any measurable length of

time past the stated or scheduled start time for work or school. Learning Disability: Decreased functioning in school despite the fact that the student is not mentally retarded or not emotionally disturbed. 7 Chapter II * Body * a. Tardiness A form of misconduct, quality of cominglate or later in time. Always and often times being tardy in the flag ceremony, in attending classes after recess time in the morning and afternoon class sessions and during the first period in the afternoon class session. There are observed instances that during their other activities that needs outdoor ctivities, they are behind schedule in attending to it. This problem had accumulated from tolerable to habitual state and it has a significant impact in their performance at school. Other students had just the difficulty in optimizing their time as their subject related activities grows in bulk. Reported incidents on online games cyber addiction were prominent and this usually happens after lunch break. Most of the class had been influenced by their peers and this would be embedded 8 in their mind pattern until college and ultimately to their vocation and their adventures in life. b. Sleeping habit/ TV shows obsession 2. Family Values on punctuality 3. Distance between residence and school 4. Online/LAN games/Social Networking Sites(SNS) cyber compulsion 5. Bullying/ stress factor 11. Classroom supervision 9 c. The Remedies to stem out or uproot tardiness As the school inculcates discipline to have a world class graduates, globally competitive and well

rounded individuals, the researcher had in mind to unearth the emedies of this punctuality virtue which is annoyingly, losing its ground. The remedies that need to be considered are Time management, Responsibility, Time discipline, and Punctuality. Punctuality is one of the virtues beyond reproach. Much of the time and wealth will be saved if this virtue will be carried out to the system of every responsible citizen. Punctuality will encompass all of the positive action in all aspects. Though it was less appreciated in other situations like productivity against punctuality, none the less, it is still very vital in situations that needed it most. d. Effects of tardiness

It is clear from literature that tardiness is a major problem. Not only do students lose valuable educational instruction when they arrive late, but they disrupt the 10 educational environment and distract others who are in the class. Excessive student tardiness has a negative impact upon a student's future. Some of the implications are academic failure, high school drop-outs, emotional dependency, drug dependency, fighting and bullying. Student tardiness is a key factor in determining if a child will become at risk. Without intervention, tardy behaviors often result in learning disabilities, erious emotional and social problems.

e. Actions to completely eliminate Tardiness The researcher made an alternative courses of action in uprooting the problems of the students in their attendance and as well as their academics. 1. The student should be guided in their time management if the reason is the distance, financial constraints on the fare, traffic load of the route and mode of transportation. 2. An arranged home visitation to personally confer with the parents or guardians about

11 the situation of the student if the primary reason was financial support for the fare ikewise read-through the family ideals in punctuality and the attitude towards child education. 3. Faithfully device an operant conditioning to give rewards to those who are early comers and reinforce consistency all through-out the school year.

4. Look into the situation of the peer influence as well as “Barkadas” or classmates that might be the reason of deplorable attitude towards learning. 5. Evaluate the student regarding its learning difficulty to the concerned subject and confer to the subject teacher the circumstances. "Good school attendance is indicative of characteristics that are essential for successful mployment and citizenship. "-Anonymous 12 * Analysis and findings related to survey The survey was done utilizing the survey questions and the result was tallied and will be scrutinized accordingly. The complexity of the Survey Sheet was intentionally prepared to extract valid and trustworthy answers from the subject population. The explicit outcome of the answers will be categorized in factors that affect their punctuality values in attending to their classes or other learning related activities.

The elucidation of the findings will be presented in non-statistical and technical languages which will enerally benefit the readers as well as the subject of the study. Factors To give due consideration on other factors that affects the schedules of the student, the researcher made a survey on the following: Figure 1. 1 shows that SOLA is the nearest school to the 15 respondents, while the other 15 respondents still chose SOLA for some reasons even if there are nearer school to their home. Distance between residence and school is one of the

probable 13 causes of being late. Figure 1. 1 14 Figure 1. 2 Figure 1. 3 15 Figure 1. 4 Figure 1. 2, 1. 3 and 1. 4represents the external factors that affect tardiness to the tudents. Figure 1. 2 states the distance of home to school and figure 1. 3 will represent the mode of transportation/ utility to reach school and the time allotted to travel to school was shown at figure 1.

4. In figure 1. 2, it shows that 43% of the students were living at the distance of more than 2 kilometers and more or less 20 to 30 minutes to reach school. With these figure representation, a student would likely be late for school since the time 16 allotted for travel is almost or half of the hour, they need to wake up early and prepare. A typical student needs 1. hours to prepare and travel to school, they should wake up as earlyas 5:00 am to have extra time for preparation and allocate time threshold for travel if the student aspires punctuality. Figure below (Figure 1. 5) shows the information on the student’s attitude towards time management. The information has a positive and negative reaction towards the value of time which may affect the student’s attendance and punctuality. Figure 1. 5 17 Figure below (Figure 1. 6) represents a small fraction on student outlook with respect to their study and school attendance. This was noted by the researcher for this mall but dominant few had made significant stimulus in students who are easily influencedbecause of varied reasons.

As the primary source of education, the parents should ultimately understand the right of

every child for education and underlying obligations related therein. Parents and or guardians who are being complacent would greatly affect child’s performance at school. Valuing the education has more on affirmative impact on the chart below with the students who are positively reinforced by parents. Figure 1. 6 18 The table below (Figure 1. 7) is representing the personal factor of every student hich comprehensively supports the reasons in being late with; attending to classes, flag ceremony, and submitting paper works, etc. This information gives us the detail on how they spend their residual time after classes or while class is going on. This clearly shows that friends/peer influence plays vital role in student’s life; secondary is the compulsion with TV shows and the pre-occupation of mobile phone to student’s attention as well as the household chores that was understandably assigned to young adolescents in their share of tasks at home.

Figure 1. 7 19 Based on the information in Figure 1. , the most dominant reason for being late in classis working with the other requirements in school which is a positive reason for committing lateness. The other reasons for being late needs some adjustments and self- regulation to stop committing it again. Basically, a sound mind needs adequate sleep to function well especially in learning lessons at school. Adequacy on the number of hours of sleep per individual vary by its age category. A typical student in adolescent stage needs 8-10 hours of sleep to ave a keener sense of

understanding the lessons all throughout the day. A student who have a complete 10 hours of undisturbed and sounding sleep was generally gaining outstanding results in academic excellence.

The graph represents the sleep habit of the subject which was generally falls at 9:00 pm and 10:00 pm. In Figure 2, if a student would sleep at 10:00 pm and should wake up at 5:00 am, therefore, the student had only 7 hours of sleep, this 1 to 3 hours depravation of sleep has significant effect on the learning period of every student. This would affect the mood, span of attention and mental aptitude. 22 Chapter III Summary of data interpretation The gathered information confirms the hypothesis of having students at 33% who are being late in attending the classes, flag ceremony and other learning related activities. The figure further states the factors that significantly affect the student’s performance at school. The researcher made an extra mile in identifying other factors which might affect the attitude towards learning by including the information gathering which was shown at figures 1. 9 and 2.

There was an indication that student had to sleep after midnight and would have adequacy on the number of hours of their sleep which might be the eason for leniency in their study. There is a student who was influenced by peer, a parent who negatively adjudged the education privileges of a child and a student who has a problem on sleep habit, the 23 number of student in this study with strikingly averse situation from the other student is less significant to negligible percentage. Furthermore, factors are to be the focus in making appropriate actions

by the researcher. Giving weight in time management and valuing the virtue of punctuality. 24 Chapter IV * Conclusion The primary purpose for this research was to determine if “soft skills,” like unctuality, are habits which can completely eliminate tardiness. The data presented shows that a student’s tardiness is closely tied to his/her academic performances. The correlation between academics and tardiness is strong forit is the basis of the student’s sense of understanding in the lessons all throughout the day. Based upon this study one could predict whether or not a student will gainan outstanding result in academics based upon his/her tardiness at school. Students who are on-time for school classes are also likely to function well especially in learning lessonswhile students who are tardy requentlywill probably affect their mood, span of attention and mental aptitude. Another aspect of this study was to examine the relationship of tardiness behaviors and students’ performances. Not surprisingly, for the student body as a wholestudent tardiness and unexcused absences are highly correlated.
