Introduction
In the current world, most of the healthcare professions follow designed code of ethics that define the operating principles that every member of a profession is expected to uphold. When the codes are associated with the issuing a license to work in a given field, a breach can occur in the license being revoked. This paper locates an article of a case resulting in a breach of professionalism in a situation of a healthcare professional using social networking.
Kevin wrote an article about a case resulting in a breach of professionalism in the year 2011 (Kevin, 2011). In the article, a doctor is reproached after the privacy information of a patient had been breached on Facebook. Perhaps, the doctor was fired from the hospital and later reprimanded by the state medical board. Additionally, all her privileges to work
...in the emergency room were taken away to the hospital as a result of leaking the privacy information of a trauma patient to the social media (Kevin, 2011). Even though the doctor did not post the name of the patient, she gave enough information such that other people within the community could easily identify the patient. This was a breach of professionalism since healthcare code of ethics does not allow doctors and nurses to post privacy information of patients on social media. Instead, doctors should provide valuable information on how medicine is practiced today on the social media.
On the other hand, the doctor violated a provision in the ANA code of ethics that claims that doctors and nurses should care for their patients while respecting their privacy (Fowler, 2008). Additionally, the provision upholds the rights of the patients
and safeguards the employees within the healthcare. Therefore, the legal and ethical issues in the case are that healthcare professionals should respect their patients’ private information and not posting the information on social media. Furthermore, the professionals should work with integrity and honesty within the healthcare environment. If inclined to such situation, I would introduce integrity and honesty as a code of ethics. This would ensure that the professionals strictly follows the ANA code of ethics and respects their juniors.
Conclusion
In an assumption, health care professionals should strictly follow the designed code of ethics so as they can avoid the act of violating the law of professionalism. Additionally, they should work with honesty and integrity thus avoiding leaking their patients’ privacy information to the media.
