This story was striking in many ways and I learned some interesting things. One thing I learned is that just because a job doesn’t pay much doesn’t mean it’s easy. The low wage paying jobs in this story were hard work and required long hours. I also learned that employers take advantage of low wage workers not just by not paying them enough but in other ways too. Lastly, I learned that there is no moving up once you are trapped in low wage work.

Or at least it’s very difficult. These employers do not encourage “professional growth” or help their employers make a better life. For the most part, it seems that low wage employers just hang on to workers as long as they can and then get new ones when they have to. In other words, even though you don’t have any money, you still have to pay.

If you can’t put up the rent for your small apartment, then you live out of a hotel. And we’re not talking any five star hotels. No suites with stocked mini bars and refrigerators. Not even a hot plate.

So you end up eating fast food or nothing at all for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Time moves faster than you think. But as a low wage worker, you’re going no where fast. You can grow old pretty fast as an unskilled worker. No low paying job is unskilled. And unless you’ve discovered the Fountain of

Youth it’ll only be a matter of time until this unskilled job does a number on you and you find yourself with grey hair.

Same bull, different day. Basically, if you work in any low wage job you’re going to be doing the same routine day after day.
