We should not judge one another; there exists a higher power who will ultimately pass judgment on individuals' choices.

As American citizens, we possess the ability to make our own decisions regarding this matter. In February 2011, President Obama displayed strong support for marriage equality by having the Justice Department endorse its constitutional reasoning.Both President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder declared the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional, emphasizing the need for legal examination of discrimination against homosexuals. The administration's decision to stop defending the act in court received both praise and criticism, highlighting President Obama's bold support for gay marriage. As the first president to advocate for equal rights regardless of sexual orientation, this courageous step resonated with homosexuals worldwide. Furthermore, being the first African American president, President Obama recognized and acknowledged the history of discrimination against black people in America. He understood that past and present discrimination is unjust.

In a recent interview with Esquire magazine, beloved celebrity couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie revealed their decision not to marry despite an 8-year relationship and 6 children together. Brad Pitt stated that they would only consider marriage when it becomes legally accessible to all individuals who desire

it. This admirable choice demonstrates their commitment to waiting until same-sex couples have equal rights before tying the knot.Public opinion on same-sex marriage appears to be more accepting than before. However, research suggests that polls may slightly overestimate support for same-sex marriage compared to actual election results. According to Silver (2013), this could indicate social pressure for voters to publicly support same-sex marriage, even if they have personal reservations about it. This tendency to conform is also observed in personal experiences.

Some people propose using "civil unions" instead of "marriage" as an alternative approach to gay marriage ("A Gay Marriage Solution: End Marriage"). But disregarding the significance of the word "marriage" could diminish its meaning. The term "marriage" symbolizes deep commitment, love, exchange of vows in front of God and loved ones, and unwavering dedication through thick and thin. In contrast, "civil union" implies a temporary and limited relationship.

So why would someone proudly declare their situation? Marriage is a proud announcement celebrated through weddings and parties, despite its potential for divorce. It should not be equated with civil unions as they are incompatible.
