Learning to read is essential for children because it not only helps them gain knowledge but also improves their educational journey. Although hands-on learning is important, reading continues to be the main way most people acquire knowledge. Developing a love for reading directly contributes to academic achievement. Personally, teaching my seven and nine-year-old daughters the lessons from CD 1 & 2 was mostly enjoyable. Despite my initial worry that my advanced reader, who is nine years old, might find it boring, she also had a positive experience.

During the lessons, she realized she had forgotten certain aspects of foundational reading. The song presentation of letter sounds on the first CD engaged the seven-year-old student. ties. The first lesson discussed the origin of the alphabet, which both students found interesting.

Despite some initial unfamiliarity with the term "engine sounds," the girls quickly grasped the concept and followed along with the activities in CD 1 without any difficulty. Even though these activities are designed for children who can already read, I have observed that they still offer benefits. My husband and I occasionally need to correct the girls' speech because they have a tendency to imitate their friends, who often use incorrect grammar and pronunciation. However, the activities in this kit provide them with the correct sounds and pronunciations of words.

On CD 2, we dedicated additional time to rapidly pronouncing the sounds by following the disc. CD 2 provided even more historical information for the girls to acquire. They discovered that our language originate

from the Romans, who brought it to the British Isles where it eventually evolved into the English language we use today. However, I found it challenging to keep up with the disc's reference to specific cards. Once we regained our focus, the girls thoroughly enjoyed playing the shortcut game for an extended period of time.

One aspect I particularly enjoyed about the shortcut game was the repetition involved. Repeating the sounds helps students remember them better. Another noteworthy element of this exercise was the encouragement for the children to engage multiple senses. The more senses they use, the more they learn. We concluded our lesson activities by learning to use the th, sh, ch, and wh sounds from the book. In this exercise, the girls combined these sounds to create words by sliding them together. The disc discussed the idea of putting up walls, but I didn't fully grasp the concept.

In spite of this, the children successfully complete CD1 and CD2 and show excitement for the upcoming lessons. This document documents the progress of my students with CD 3 and 4. As you may be aware, I am utilizing my two daughters, aged seven and nine. We started by reviewing what we had previously learned from CD 1 and 2. The repetition has proven to be the most effective method for ensuring that the students retain what they have learned. Despite already possessing reading skills, my students remain highly interested and engaged in the lesson. The songs and music play a significant role in capturing their attention.

During the first part of the lesson, students were taught how to break words into

syllables and identify them by clapping while saying the word. Various games were introduced to practice creating words using sounds. Using shortcuts to form words proved to be a simpler approach for the students. They found great enjoyment in playing these games and continued playing for an extended period of time. Among the games played was tick tack toe, where they used sounds to find words with similar sounds. I played this game with the girls and it never lost its appeal.

On the earlier discs, the girls were taught that the 26 alphabet letters have 44 sounds. On CD 3, they reviewed these sounds before moving on to creating sentences using these words. The ability to convert words into sentences is crucial for fluent reading. The teacher emphasizes the significance of reading from left to right, as it is a key factor for becoming a successful reader. CD 4 covers proper enunciation of words, discouraging guessing and emphasizing the importance of reading what is seen rather than what is assumed. Developing a strong foundation is essential for becoming an independent reader.

Disc 4 took us to the next level by delving into vowels and their corresponding sounds. The students were taught the distinctive sounds produced by vowels and the circumstances under which these sounds occur. They were also introduced to the helpful concept that when two vowels appear consecutively, the first vowel sound takes precedence. I found this mnemonic device to be highly effective in recollecting vowel sounds, given their potential for complexity. Nevertheless, my daughters encountered some challenges with the ur sounds. Fortunately, it is a matter of memorization. One particularly intriguing

aspect was the revelation that different countries pronounce letters dissimilarly from us. Understanding the etymology of a word aids in both spelling and pronunciation.

In my Reflective Paper, my six daughters connected this concept to a movie they watched called Akeelah and the bee, which was about a spelling bee. In general, the girls were never bored with the games or lessons and were ready to move on to CD 5 and 6. This paper records the progress of my students as we used CD 5 and 6. As you know, I am using my seven and nine-year-old daughters. We began by reviewing what we learned from CD 3 and 4. This time, we had a few additional children joining in on the fun.

The program I learned about builds upon the previous lesson, making it difficult to join in midway. Repetition is effective in helping students remember what they have learned. As we progressed through the first disc, students learned various activities like clapping, buzzing, and exercising vowel sounds. However, there are times when the vowel sounds don't follow the rules.

They are referred to as outlaws because they follow their own set of rules. This session focused on sentence creation and comprehension through various games. The students were introduced to the letters i, y, and e, and discovered the similarity between y and i. They also learned that once a student learns how to read, they have the ability to teach others. It is crucial

for students to practice reading accurately. In previous lessons, the girls learned that there are 44 sounds in the 26-letter alphabet, and in CD 5 and 6, they utilized these sounds. It is important to continuously review the sounds until they become automatic.

The student can improve their reading speed by using multiple senses. The teacher emphasizes the importance of reading from left to right and being a successful reader. On CD 6, the teacher highlights that reading is essential for learning. The majority of our learning comes from reading, while the rest is derived from our senses. At this stage, the students are highly proficient in decoding and pronunciation, so the CD introduces capitalization of words.

During the lesson, the students learned about capitalization rules and how to use a dictionary to find word meanings. They completed activities from the workbook and remained engaged throughout the entire lesson. The most enjoyable part of lessons on CD 5 and 6 was the instruction on using specific letter combinations like au, aw, ou, and ow. Although the new group of children couldn't participate, they still found listening to my daughter's lessons enjoyable.
