Introduction

The term professional is one of the most exalted in the English language denoting as it does long and arduous years of preparation a striving for excellence a dedication to The public interest and moral and ethical values. The service to the public as a professional turns out to be dedicated and committed only when moral, ethical religious values serve our bedrock foundation. The same moral, ethical and religious convictions inspire us to embrace continuing professional education. The teaching is the highest profession; it is because teaching is calling.

The mission is to preparing the youth and nurtures the children for the future life. Teaching is not a job it is more than a job. It is a mission to carry out. on today. The teacher professionalism contains three essential characteristics, competence, performance and conduct which reflect the educator’s goals, abilities and standard and directly impact the effectiveness of teaching through the development of the students.

Definition

The Professional teacher is the licensed professional who possesses dignity and reputation with high moral values as well as technical and professional competence he or she adheres to observes and practices a set of ethical and moral principles, standards and values (Code of Ethics of professional teacher 1997). Professionalism is highly treasured in the teaching profession. The teacher is adjudge professional if they are knowledgeable, skilled and value laden. Dedication to the job of teaching is the true essence of professionalism.

Teacher professionalism has relevant significance in education in that it affects the role of the teacher and his or her pedagogy, which in return affects the student’s ability to learn effectively. It can be defined as the ability to reach students in a meaningful way, developing innovative approaches to mandated content while motivating, engaging, and inspiring young adult minds to prepare for ever-advancing technology

The Personal Attribute of Professional Teachers

A professional teacher needs to be confident without arrogant and preparation is another crucial requirements of professionalism. A teacher refers to a person responsible in imparting lessons, guiding, instructing and training a person or group of students in a particular academic knowledge or skill. Being a teacher is a professional occupation usually employed in formal schools and institutions. Some colleges and universities require teachers who have professional qualification. Teaching is a difficult job.

It requires utter dedication and selflessness to be able to impart your learning to the students. It not only deals with academic knowledge alone. Being very knowledgeable will not immediately qualify as a good teacher. What is more important is the attitude and the skill of being able to transfer the lessons effectively to the students. It is a gift. A teacher will be dealing with many students of different personalities. Some will be like a sponge who grasps the main ideas very easily. Other students will require more patience as they would find it more difficult to understand the subject matter.

As a teacher, it is his role to take

care of all of these students, making sure no one is left behind. Personality is the sum of ones personal characteristics. The teachers more than any other professional are momentarily subjected to scrutiny to the minutes detail and observation by those they associated with. Teacher’s personality must be natural and genuine that is devoid of pretense and artifiality. Teacher must be consistent, true and authentic.

a). Passion-passionate teachers exude spontaneity in ministering to the needs of the students specially those experiencing learning difficulties.

b). Humor-stands anything funny which elicits a smile, laughter or amusing reaction. It is an essential quality of teachers that serves a number of purposes.

c). Values and Attitude-Teachers is model of values, heather conscious of them or not, values are exhibited implicitly and explicitly.

d). Patience-In teaching patience refers to a teacher’s uncomplaining nature, self control and persistence. Patient teachers can forgo momentous frustration and disappointment instead they calmly endure their student’s limitation and difficulties.

e). Enthusiasm-enthusiasm is synonymous to eagerness and excitement. Enthusiastic teachers are full of energy and dynamism. Their passion and love for children are easily felt and not long after their lively presence in the classroom. Enthusiasm is a gift. It is contagious and can instantly affect children’s moods and attitudes.

f). Leadership- Being in a position of authority, teachers must know how to take the lead. There is no room for shyness and timidity. Leaders must have a vision, a goal toward which they are directing the students. They must inspire and encourage students to implement action. The best leaders are the best listeners.

g). Preparedness-Students quickly disrespect teachers who are unprepared. Being unprepared shows your lack of care about the students and

the material. It makes you appear incompetent. Be prepared for every class in order to win and maintain your students' respect.

Professional and Personal Qualities of Teacher

Teachers can be popular just because they are friendly and helpful, but to be truly professional and effective they need other qualities.

Students may not be able to put their finger on just why one teacher is more effective than another but we need to be able to identify the skills and behavior we require in a true professional. Effective teaching is one of the central purposes of educational practice and research in improving learning. But behind the mastery of learning stands the mastery of teaching. Understanding teaching has presented a persistent and formidable challenges to those who have sought to improve the quality of teaching and learning over the years.

Teachers are important and make a difference. The Quality of teaching is a crucial factor in promoting effective learning in schools. Effective teaching requires well-rounded instructors who are confident in the material they teach as well as their own skin. Students have a keen ability to sense if a teacher is nervous, unsure or lying. Being genuine is one of the most important personal characteristics that a teacher can possess. There are other personal and professional characteristics as well that are necessary for effective teaching.

A). Professional qualities

  1. Mastery of the subject/field one teaches-the first essential of teaching is that the teacher must have a thorough grasp of the subject he teaches. Effective learning demands that the teacher possesses solid knowledge of the subject or field that he teaches.
  2. Understanding of the Learner-A second essential of effective teaching is knowledge of children.

This means understanding the basic principles of human growth and development. He must know the adjustment children have to make at various stages pf development and the physical, emotional and social problem they face in growing up. He must develop the special skills needed in gathering information about children.

  • Understanding of teaching principles and skills in the use of techniques for their implementation-To promote learning effectively, a teacher must know not only what subject matter but also how method to teach. Hence the third essential effective teaching is skill with teaching methods. Teaching methods involve understanding of curriculum theory and practice, the nature and principles of learning, types of learning outcomes and psychology of motivation and individual differences which are the bases for selecting and organizing learning experiences.
  • General Understanding of Other branches of knowledge-Present day teaching demands that a teacher possesses a general understanding of other branches of knowledge. He must be able to show how subject relates with other fields, particularly in the solution of life’s problems.
  • Understanding and Appreciation of the Teaching Profession-The degree of a teacher’s success depends to a great extent on his attitude toward his job. Teaching involves varied relationships among various individuals. A teacher must know how to work effectively not only with pupils but also with all other person involves in the school. Teacher must understand the importance of his profession as socially useful work and recognized its rewards as well s its restriction and trials.
  • B). Personal Qualities of Professional Teacher

    Personal qualities are so interrelated with high professional qualities that are quite hard to isolate them. These personal characteristics are related to the five aspect of personality:

    intellectual, social, physical, emotional, and moral.

    1. Pleasing personal appearance, manner, courtesy, pleasant voice.
    2. Intelligence, emotional stability, and self control
    3. Sympathy, kindness, helpfulness, patience
    4. Integrity, trustworthiness, honesty, loyalty
    5. Flexibility, creativity, resourcefulness
    6. Fairness, impartiality, tolerance
    7. Sense of humor, cheerfulness, enthusiasm

    Becoming a Professional Teacher

    The Professional teacher is one who went through four to five years period of rigorous academic preparation in teaching and one who has given a license to teach by the Board for Professional teachers of the Professional Regulation Commission after filling a requirements prescribed by the Law such as passing the Licensure Examination for Teacher (LET).

    The Government made an act related to the professional teacher how become truly professional teacher. Under the Republic Act number 7836 Article III. Teacher should holding a license from the board and he or her name should be registered in the board. Here are some ways of being a professional teacher

    Passing the Licensure Examination for Teachers.

    1. Having special knowledge to the subject field
    2. Update your self with professional literature, taking and finishing graduate studies, attending seminars etc.
    3. Be a good team player. Cooperate, unite and share ideas with others. . Set internal and external standards. Follow rules of the DepEd and Code of Ethics.
    4. Be positive, future oriented and 0pen to change
    5. Understand yourself worth, dignity and efficacy and continually harness your own potential to develop yourself.
    6. Value freedom and responsibility
    7. Serve your country. Be proud to be Filipino, your country, language, history, cultural heritage, value and national aspiration.
    8. Have faith. Seek the integration of your spiritual and moral value in your daily life. In Seventh day Adventist school, there is requirement for qualification for

    4. Relationship with parents
    5. Relationship with school official
    6. Relationship with nonteaching personnel
    7. Relationship with the community
    8. Relationship with the profession

    1. The Christian teacher should exercise his right as a citizen of the church and his country but avoid controversy in both areas.
    2. He is a servant in the highest sense, and should be selfless in dedication to the truth.
    3. His personal interest must never interfere with his personal integrity.
    4. The teacher must always endeavor to grade pupils objectively. He will be also to imparted and just.
    5. He will guard jealousy the confidence of the children and the records of his school.
    6. He will work toward the closet co-operation between the home and the school
    7. He will realize that he is at all times an ambassador of God.
    8. The Christian teacher will avoid criticism of the

    administrator or another teacher’s method of teaching, discipline and relationship with his pupils

  • If a situation exists in the school, which is so serious that its remedy requires the help of the higher authority, it is the obligation for the teacher to present a formal, confidential report to the proper school official. If after carefully adhering to this procedure, he may appeal directly to the mission educational superintendent
  • If a teacher wishes to be relocate he should make his first desires known to his mission educational superintendent.
  • Both the teacher and employer should adhere faithfully to the contact until it is dissolved by mutual consent
  • The teacher should avoid criticism and innuendo of either his successors or his predecessors
  • A teacher will avoid using the teaching profession as a stepping –stone to some other position
  • The teacher should not exploit himself or the school through newspaper or other notices or other advertisement or by other professional means
  • The teacher should never accept commission, royalty or gratuity for books or supplies or any other thing whose purchase he can influence or decide not should he accept compensation of any kind for helping another teacher find a position
