The life of humans exclusively depends on the ability of the memory to function as required. To undergo and process many activities and circumstances require the use of one’s memory. People have varying memory levels due to varying age, gender and other personal conditions that may lower the thinking ability. There are different types of memory according to functionality. I will view the photographic or eidetic imagery memory.

I was interested in improving my photographic memory and decided to do it in a series of steps. I asked a friend to act as my instructor during the process. My friend is a microbiologist, so I asked her to show me the image of something unfamiliar to my eyes. The experience of describing an image using my memory was challenging as I could not remember everything. I recalled new details each time I described the image.

People with the memory of eidetic imagery can remember images in detail, the individual still perceives clarity and accuracy that appear like the image. Despite the benefits of photographic memory, it is considered imperfect because of its limitations. The type of memory is subject to distortions, additions, and vocalization that continuously interfere with the memory. Another limitation is the fact that the image becomes blurred and distorted after a few minutes after the removal of the visual stimulus. Persons with photographic memory have the ability to recall text and page numbers in high detail without visualization. The individuals can look at information in a paged and recite it correctly from the memory.

Some driving forces led me to choose my target as photographic memory. One of the reasons is the fact that the type of memory is only found in children and not in existence among adults. As a result, I wanted to know whether I can improve my photographic memory. Another reason for my particular choice of photographic memory is the notion that persons with eidetic memory are born and not made. My primary aim was to ascertain in I can train myself to have a complete photographic memory.

Some memory principles facilitated my ability in improving my photographic memory. The first principle is my interest in remembering the image my friend showed me. By having the will to learn, I managed to have a glimpse of the image and describe it without visualization. Mental visualization is the next strategy I used during my training. I created a mental picture of the image which resulted in

my clear and coherent description. Another memory principle that was useful was the intent to remember. I staged my mind to have a positive attitude towards remembering descriptions of the image. As a result, I was able to program my mind to attention. Having some knowledge about the background is the final memory strategy I applied while improving my eidetic memory. I already knew the profession of my instructor friend, a microbiologist. The basic knowledge resulted in the sensory thought on the use of the image in viewing specimens. It is important to gain and access some basic information about the picture in the study for active memory status.

I experienced positive results after applying the techniques of improving memory. I improved my photographic memory by looking at an image and later giving a detailed description without visualization. My memory principles I applied during the process of training my memory kept my brain sharp. My concentration was high and undivided during the whole time resulting in effective reporting and a quick description. I am positive that memory principles play a significant role in improving the memory of an individual.

Photographic/eidetic memory is an important part of the sensory that facilitates recall of past items. A person can remember images, sounds, and objects according to the level of his/her photographic memory. Children are thought to possess photographic memory which only fades away after the age of six years. Photographic memory is not existent among the adults which necessitate training for improvement.
