I believe I am in a subculture lifestyle, that I identify as a Native American that still practices my traditions in a modern society. As a Native American living in the 21st century, I am proud to continue keeping up my families traditions and respect my native culture. I have seen so many people in my family come and go to support the culture but most family do not resurface due to modern life. Being Native American in our modern society today is fairly forgotten and referred to as being, “extinct.” Since I was very young my mother who was the Chief of our tribe at the time encouraged me to always be more knowledgeable about our native practices. I have been present to all community events along with ceremonial activities during the Pinnacles

to provide setting up assistance and serving as one of the main dancers during our ceremonies. I enjoy being an active member in our family for the pure happiness of my family interacting and remembering who we came from. The Chalon traditions we do represent a critical piece to our culture, it helps us define our past, shapes us today, and who we will likely become in our future. I believe if we continue to ignore our traditions in the culture we will be endangering the base of our identity. I am proud of our family and I feel honored to have the opportunity to be here to carry on our families legacy.

In American society today I would have to say the biggest norm would have to be technology. It is a blessing and a curse at the same time. It’

silly to think that some people’s lives have to revolve around social media. Seems more often that not at dinner tables with friends and family people are more consumed with what’s on their phones rather than having a decent conversation with someone across the table, seems rather silly to me. Also negative relationships because you feel like you need to find someone. Why does it feel that some individuals have to have confirmation that they are beautiful and needed when in reality they need to love themselves and be independent. It’s not okay to feel like someone needs to tell you those things when you are already those things and be confident with yourself, and if you aren’t you should try to work on the things you want in life. Some people need to know their worth because someone is going to see all you have to offer them and more. I think my parents would agree with me when I’d say these things about our society today with younger generations. We just have so much influence everywhere to be anyone but ourselves when we should just be carefree and support each other, not tear each other down just to make yourself feel better about the position you are in.

The two agents of socialization that have influenced me would have to be my mass media, family and my culture. Yes I remember what I said about mass media (the internet/social media) being a curse but I also said it was a blessing. It’s a blessing to me because it has helped diversify me and helped me learn about different situations others are in and their

stories. On YouTube I watch a ton of various videos and some make me question a lot of things which is beneficial because I should be asking more questions about different things. Along with making friends online and staying connected to my long-time friends. My family is a really big influence as to who I am today, I came into life only knowing my family and always trusting them for my safety and well-being. They taught me at a young age to work hard and be independent. They showed me love and compassion but with some discipline when need be. Since my mom was a cop she knew the real world and what could happen to me so she always warned me to never talk to anyone I don’t know or if I felt uncomfortable with a situation to tell someone immediately even if they were family.

My family is very big on staying together even through the toughest of times, and I’m glad to say I’ve learned these values myself. Along with family comes culture and traditions. In my family we do Native American ceremonies and invite everyone to celebrate it as we give back to the earth. It is very spiritual and respected, I am one of the dancers in my tribe so i have a big part. This ceremony brings my family all together as we travel to our homeland called, “The Pinnicales,” to give thanks to our ancestors for being able to provide and give us the chance we have today. It is a great honor to keep this going in our family as a long time tradition for generations. This has

been a major influence in my life and has given me the attitude to persevere anything because we have the opportunity to make anything happen today in this age, stick with my native beliefs, and value my family over all else.
