National TV Turn-Off Week: A Dumb Idea 9920 Essay Example
Despite the ongoing presence of hunger and war globally, individuals in North America allocate a substantial amount of time each day to watching television. A notable illustration of this commitment is the annual commemoration of National T.V-Turnoff Week, which extends for one week.
The cry for attention by the middle class that is National T.V-Turnoff week should not overshadow the challenges faced by the lower classes, such as starvation, health, and shelter. The middle class may appear problem-free, but they too have their share of issues.
They possess a house, a job, and typically a caring family. However, what they lack is a concern-free existence. Enter Linda Weltner and National T.V-Turnoff Week, offering a solution. Now, the middle class has a new source of worry.
For years, people have enjoyed watching television without any complaints. They are not bothered by the abundance of informati
...on that television offers or the countless hours of entertainment it provides. However, it is now being criticized that we, as a society, spend excessive time watching TV. Critics suggest that we could utilize our time more effectively and strive for personal growth.
Advocates of initiatives such as National T.V-Turnoff Week assert that abstaining from television viewing can yield beneficial effects on one's life. They contend that participating in pleasurable and potentially stress-reducing activities like knitting can be a more productive way to spend time. However, what is truly gained from choosing knitting over television? Perhaps a sweater? Undoubtedly, it is feasible to create a unique article of clothing. Regardless, for the average person in contemporary society, relinquishing connection with the world is not worth the sacrifice.
In our fast-paced society where communication is always available throug
beepers, cell phones, and the Internet, even a brief lack of connection can have a significant impact on one's life. Moreover, there is no reason why knitting should only be limited to leisure activities. Additionally, I strongly disagree with the notion that television has negative effects on young minds. This belief holds great importance for me personally as a young immigrant who came to Canada without knowing English and experienced social isolation from society as a result. Consequently, it presented difficulties in school and hindered my ability to communicate with friends.
Despite the efforts of teachers and my parents, I resorted to watching television as a way to help myself. Over time, I gradually acquired the language and after a year, my vocabulary skills were on par with my classmates. Thanks to my dedication to television and refusal to abandon it like many of my peers, I am now proficient in English without most people suspecting it is not my primary language. Therefore, television serves as a source of education, entertainment, and broadening of one's horizons.
Furthermore, television offers the convenience of being able to be enjoyed alongside other activities and is also relatively affordable. Whether we are using it to teach our children or relying on it for entertainment when we are tired, television has greatly helped us. As a result, there is no reason why we should give up our beloved companion and refrain from watching it for an entire week.
