The National Service Training Program (PLKN) was introduced by the government to foster national unity among different races. It started in 2003 and became fully operational in 2004. The program is a three-month, full-time live-in experience for recent high school graduates with the aim of addressing racial division and promoting unity among young individuals. Its main objectives are to cultivate patriotism and strengthen the spirit of nationalism among youth.
The objectives of PLKN include promoting national integration, racial unity, character development, and volunteerism. Participants engage in four training modules - physical, nation-building, character-building, and community service. Despite their different objectives, all modules require teamwork among participants of diverse races.
For example, the physical module is designed to enhance the mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical skills and endurance of trainees in the National Service Training Program
...(NSTP) to create effective citizens. Within this module, numerous sports activities will be included. Sports serve as an effective means to bridge racial differences and foster integration and unity. Through sports, trainees are encouraged to work collectively as a team to achieve victory. The character-building module aims to develop effective character traits in the trainees.
The module consists of two sections: personal growth and relationship building. It encompasses a range of subjects, such as culture and religions, to provide trainees with insight into diverse races and belief systems. The Integration program, facilitated by external instructors over a week, plays an essential part in fostering racial integration among trainees.
The final day of the integration program concludes with a closing ceremony, where trainees will present their traditional cultural performance on stage. The program's main goal is to encourage trainees to have a more interactive understanding
of various cultures. Another module in the program focuses on nation-building, allowing trainees to expand their knowledge about their country and showcase their love and commitment towards it. This specific module also aims to promote appreciation for national unity and its role in creating peace and harmony. Furthermore, the community service module offers opportunities for trainees to develop self-confidence and resilience.
The activities in this module necessitate trainees to collaborate, enabling them to enhance their understanding of each other and develop stronger bonds. Furthermore, PLKN unites youths from diverse backgrounds in a single setting. Trainees hailing from various states and leading different lifestyles are obliged to coexist for three months at the same location. Throughout this period, they have opportunities to familiarize themselves with one another's cultures and lifestyles through close proximity living arrangements and communal meals.
Muslims are obligated to pray five times daily, while Christians and Buddhists go to church and temple on Sundays. The National Service Training Program (PLKN) serves as a successful method of promoting national unity among young people. The government has dedicated considerable time and effort to improving PLKN's quality and effectiveness. Throughout the years, approximately 600,000 youths have received training through PLKN, leading to enhanced character development. It is recommended that the government enforce mandatory participation in PLKN for all individuals.
