The American Nurses Association (2004, p. 7) provides a definition of nursing as "protection, promotion, and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations." Nevertheless, I perceive nursing to encompass more than just this definition. This paper will delve into my personal philosophy regarding nursing while emphasizing the crucial qualities that I consider necessary for a nurse.

The core of my nursing philosophy and value/belief system revolves around knowledge, time management, compassion/caring, advocacy, respect, honesty, and patient privacy. These elements, combined with my personal values, guided me in choosing a career in nursing. Nursing is a purposeful profession committed to assisting and nurturing others. Many individuals who enter this field share comparable value syste

ms. To excel in this role, acquiring knowledge is vital. As a nurse, comprehending illnesses and their processes is imperative.

In order to be an effective nurse, it is essential to apply classroom knowledge and skills in the workplace. Simply passing a nursing exam does not ensure success in the health care setting. Hence, I believe that the application of knowledge holds greater importance. While personality and bedside manner are crucial when caring for patients, they alone do not guarantee success in nursing. To excel as a nurse, one must also think holistically and consistently anticipate the needs of patients.

It is essential that healthcare professionals have the ability to prioritize health care issues for individual patients and among multiple patients they are responsible for on a given day. Additionally, effective intervention is crucial in addressing these issues. Alongside prioritization, strong time management skills ar

necessary. Failing to properly organize and manage time can result in insufficient healthcare for patients. Personally, I have always valued and believed in being compassionate and caring, a trait instilled in me through my family upbringing.

In the nursing profession, it is essential to possess a great deal of compassion and care for patients and their families. This includes attending to both their physical health and emotional needs. For instance, this semester in clinical we are working on a palliative/oncology floor, which presents unique challenges compared to previous semesters in acute care settings. Caring for palliative or chronically ill patients involves acknowledging and managing complex emotional issues that require the attention of healthcare professionals.

The patients I have encountered have shown to be particularly humble and tidy individuals once a rapport and trust has been established. While attending to their medical needs, a significant portion of our time is spent engaging in conversations about their life and interests. Ultimately, our role extends beyond providing medical care as we also provide them with emotional support. Empathy and compassion are vital qualities required for this type of nursing. Additionally, my nursing philosophy encompasses ethics and the fundamental human rights of patients. Respect for the patient, advocacy, honesty, and privacy are all principles that every individual deserves, with particular significance in the healthcare environment.

The American Nurses Association (2001, p. 12) states that nurses have the responsibility to safeguard and advocate for the health, safety, and rights of patients. However, it is important to acknowledge that providing patients with the care they need depends on effective collaboration among healthcare professionals such as doctors, therapists, dieticians, social workers, case managers etc. Without

collaboration across all areas of healthcare, patients may not receive the essential managed care they need.

Understanding and aligning my nursing philosophy with the current healthcare system is of utmost importance to me. The shortage of nurses in our nation is currently severe and projected to worsen. It is widely recognized that healthcare can be expensive, making it unattainable for individuals who lack insurance coverage. Furthermore, as the baby boomer generation continues to age, there is an increasing need for us to integrate our knowledge, values, and idealism into our professional environments.

The incorporation of key aspects in nursing, including knowledge, time management, compassion/caring, advocacy, respect, honesty, and patient privacy will lead to notable enhancements in healthcare. Furthermore, the departure of numerous nurses from the baby boomer era will worsen the scarcity of healthcare professionals. Henceforth, it is imperative to examine prevailing healthcare problems within our society and comprehend the particular health difficulties faced by our patients.

The primary reasons for mortality in this nation are ailments that individuals opt for according to their lifestyle preferences. Instead of concentrating on treating these illnesses, our healthcare system should give priority to the general health of the population. As healthcare providers, we must support screening and early interventions, such as education, to decrease the occurrence of patients developing these conditions. By effectively promoting good health, nurses fulfill their responsibilities proficiently. To sum up, as a graduating group of nurses, it is crucial that we bring our knowledge, values, and idealism into our workplaces and put them into practice.

If we can embrace the fundamental attributes of nursing, including knowledge, time management, compassion/caring, advocacy, respect, honesty, and patient privacy, we will flourish

and gain admiration in our field. This admiration will be garnered not only from patients and their families but also from fellow healthcare professionals and colleagues. I am dedicated to upholding my own nursing philosophy throughout my professional journey. Nursing is an esteemed and gratifying profession that I am eager to make a valuable contribution to.
