Since my last application, I have graduated with a bachelor's degree in Art from La Sierra University and enrolled in Rutgers Graduate School of Biomedical Science. In this dental scholar master program, I took dental-related courses such as "Intro to Structural Biology" and "Dental Material Science." In Structural Biology, I learned techniques used to determine the three-dimensional structure of macromolecules, how biofilms are formed, and how dentists and scientists analyze the interaction between certain saliva proteins and bacteria proteins like Prolin-rich protein, Statherin, Histatin, Dispersin B, and Tight adherens A. On the other hand, in Dental Material Science, I learned that different materials' characteristics such as biocompatibility, cost, ductility, malleability, toughness, and conductivity should be thoroughly considered to optimize the patient's overall condition. Through this dental program, I formed strong connections with other dental explore

rs to enhance interpersonal skills that will benefit me after matriculation. Additionally, I experienced the challenges that dental school demands.

I strongly believe that my previous experiences in the dental field will be extremely valuable to my overall understanding and knowledge. Being directly involved in actual dental procedures is undeniably the most effective way to truly grasp the intricacies of dentistry and gain practical experience. In June 2014, I was fortunate enough to have an exceptional opportunity to assist a close friend during his WREB Exam. Specifically, I provided assistance during the restorative section of the exam by preparing and placing a rubber dam, as well as providing suction and rinsing assistance.

Despite the challenging circumstances, our collaboration was smooth, enabling me to offer timely and accurate assistance from a favorable perspective. Assisting the dental candidate not only enhanced my comprehension of the

examination process but also boosted my ability to confidently guide others in this field. This experience offered valuable insight into dentistry, confirming my choice to pursue it as a career. An illustration of my leadership skills and self-motivation is evident in my enrollment at Rutgers Graduate School of Biomedical Science, where I have confronted challenges directly while conducting research with Dr. [insert name].

Kotenko's lab. To enhance my biochemical knowledge and improve my chances as a competitive applicant, I worked alongside Dr. Kotenko in researching the antiviral activity of interferon Type III and I in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. Our investigation involved examining different types of antibodies and assessing their interaction with various cell types' interferon receptors using different assays. For example, utilizing the IVIS Spectrum (In Vivo Imaging System), we measured the extent of antiviral activity that the interferon could induce in a live mouse.

From my research experience, I gained insight into the skills needed for conducting successful research. It taught me that precision, patience, and attention to detail are essential, as well as critical thinking to design accurate experiments. Actively participating in weekly meetings and assisting the researcher in data collection and analysis allowed me to learn scientific techniques and enhance my knowledge of research methodology. The opportunity to study abroad in the United States from Taiwan has not only fostered an independent mindset but also broadened my perspective and improved my ability to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds worldwide. I take pride in embracing diversity and am prepared to assist patients without regard to their ethnicity, race, or religion. A notable example is

when I volunteered at St. Paul's Hospital in Taiwan and encountered an American tourist who urgently sought help due to severe abdominal pain.

Understanding her insecurity, I approached and conversed with her in English to help alleviate her stress. Her surprise subsided and her nerves gradually calmed as I escorted her for an X-ray examination. I was astonished by the power of a simple act to ease people's anxiety and insecurity. As a volunteer, I gained the ability to assess individuals' needs promptly and provide assistance while utilizing my cultural background as a connection between nurses and patients.

While working in the ER, I had the opportunity to gain valuable insights and collaborate closely with nurses by providing assistance whenever necessary. I strongly believe that dentistry is a profession that combines both scientific knowledge and artistic abilities. Being an Art major student, I possess a keen sense of aesthetics, exceptional manual dexterity, creativity, and effective time management skills. Throughout my undergraduate years, I was honored with numerous scholarships and awards for my artwork. Taking art classes not only allowed me to confidently apply my dexterity to my personal creations but also excel in the technical laboratory skills essential in dentistry.

Art is a powerful form of communication, allowing individuals to express their ideas, emotions, and inspiration. Personally, it has been a source of tranquility for me, helping me find relief from stress and maintain a balanced life. In addition to my artistic abilities, I also possess exceptional hands-on skills that would greatly aid in mastering dental laboratory techniques. I have

obtained a degree from the Graduate School of Biomedical Science which demonstrates my intelligence and expertise in scientific knowledge. Furthermore, my experience in researching oral disease and molecular biology will be invaluable as I pursue my future dental studies.

My father is a well-known otolaryngologist in Taiwan and also one of the District Governors of the International Rotary Club. During his term, he successfully raised millions of dollars for Polio vaccine in underprivileged countries and facilitated the setup of blood donation buses in our city. Watching my father in action, I not only learned about the clinical operations and procedures but was also struck by the genuine smiles, respect, and appreciation he received from his patients.

Inspired by my father, I possess the necessary skills and inclination to be a dedicated dentist and a committed alumnus of UCSF. I am confident in my ability to contribute to the dental school's foundation on an annual basis. As a volunteer, I had the opportunity to serve as both a mural designer and director for the Children's Playground Mural Project at a local serenity home.

Sylvia's Serenity Home is a beautiful refuge for both children and single women. Our purpose was to enhance their everyday lives through our artistic abilities. As a team of art students, we aimed to identify issues within our community and employ our skills in various forms, including designing a collection of posters.
