Sleep Paralysis has affected everyday people since the beginning of the human race. Many know it exists, but don't fully understand this parasomnia, or sleep disorder. New discoveries on this terrifying disorder, some may experience at night, are on the rise. Researchers are discovering how Sleep Paralysis affects the human body, why this disorder is brought upon to some people, and effective ways to help prevent the nightly experiences.
Sleep Paralysis can be easily described as a “waking nightmare” that can commence one to three hours after falling asleep. It is a condition in which a person experiences episodes of consciousness in the night, where one cannot move or speak, combined with hallucinations. These hallucinations are often terrifying and hard to forget since the individual’s senses and awareness are intact.

...s. The first and most common among the three is when the individual senses a presence or intruder. These visions are so realistic that some have reported paranormal activity, and even reported thoughts of being subjected to tests or rituals. However, this is just a hallucination and one with this disorder is not truly in danger. The second is known as Incubus Hallucinations. This is when the person may physically feel, during their hallucination. They feel someone or something pressing down on their chest, abdomen, or even neck causing them pain and lack of oxygen. Lastly, Vestibular- Motor hallucinations may occur. This to some is a pleasurable experience and not a frightening form of Sleep Paralysis. This consists of, what is known as out-of-body experiences, where one’s mind or spirit leaves their physical being, observing events or places from above.

mental health of a person cannot only be a cause of Sleep Paralysis, but an effect as well. Research has shown that those who were abused in early life may be more exposed to this disorder, whether they remembered the abuse or not. According to a study later published in Sleep Medicine Reviews, amnesia, or memory loss due to brain damage, was linked to frequent Sleep Paralysis and intense hallucinations presented in all three forms. Someone with good mental health however, can also experience Sleep Paralysis, or forms of it, if under stress. Having these terrifying experiences concerns those involved in healthcare due to the toll it takes on the body of those exposed. Many have reported lack of sleep in view of the fact that they were scared to do so. This can lead to severe anxiety and deprMedical Careersession especially among adolescents .
Although Sleep Paralysis isn't something that is easily rid of, there are ways one can lessen the occurrences and eventually improve mental health. Some ways to help conquer the disorder are to develop a calming bedtime routine, avoid background noise, such as television when going to sleep, meditation, and even avoiding sleeping on your back.
Sleep Paralysis although may not be a concern to some, plays a big role in the mental health of those it affects. A better understanding of this sleep disorder is key to developing new ways of dealing with it, and helping those afflicted. With new discoveries and a better insight, researchers have already found preventive techniques and ways of dealing with the abnormal experiences.
