Naturally, mate selection is always dependent on natural selection. Men look for healthy, young and beautifully women who have a potential of producing healthy children. On the other hand, women look for men who are strong and have a greater potential of becoming a protector and provider for her and her children.
According to homogamy theory, individuals are always attracted to people who originate from their own similar backgrounds.
These backgrounds include; age, race, and education. For example; an Indian-American will always find him or herself getting married to an Indian-American.
On the other hand, complementary –needs theory indicates that individuals prefer mates whose needs are opposite and complementary to their own. For example; a woman may choose a mate who has a certain disorder such as Alcohol use Disorder.
Lastly,
...exchange theory suggests that mate selection is determined by assessment of an individual who has the greatest reward with a lower cost of acquaintance and maintenance. For instance, a man may select a mate from a region that does not ask for dowry during initial marriage ties.
Personally, I believe that homogamy is the best theory ever. In our world, people tend to marry people from their own race, education level, and age. A Ph.D. Woman will always aim to get married by a Ph.D. man. In my life, I always fall within the homogamy explanation of my relationship. My boyfriend comes from my race; he is learned as I am and we are living within the same age group. Yes, I would marry an individual from same education level, religion, age group or race. But, I believe selecting a mate from similar background improves couples understanding in term
of cultural integration.

Gender inequality is a pressing issue we have globally. Thinking sociologically and using facts and terms from your readings, to what extent does America suffer from Gender stratification?
According to a documentary I watched on National television based on a research by the United Nations Development Programme, gender inequality is a major problem affecting women globally. Women are the major victims as far as gender inequality are concerned. They are discriminated in political representation, education, and labor market and health access. This affects their development and freedom of choice towards their individual cause.
Regardless of the fact that America is considered a developed and world leader, gender stratification is one problem faced by women. This is well evident as far as power sharing, salary distribution; access to education and health services is concerned. For example, men are more powerful than women in the political arena because they are more mayors, members of Congress, senators, and governors. This is also distributed in other societal and economic matters such as access to education facilities, job opportunities, and health institutions.
