I believe that the First Amendment is important because it gives people an opportunity to make judgments of good and bad ideas by providing a public space which is protected and in which competing thoughts can prove their worth and within which all people's ideas can coexist. The First Amendment grants people the right to hear all sides of any issue and make judgments without having interference or control from the government. It creates a climate which allows us as individuals to write and speak our minds, worship the way we choose, make gatherings for peaceful purposes and ask the government concerning the rights or wrongs that we observe in the society. It also gives us the freedom to debate, learn, disagree and grow. If the founders of the First Amendments could never have envisioned the appeals made by people like Marilyn Manson or Eminem, they would not have known the real meaning of freedom.

Conclusion

The founders of the First Amendment recognized that, if we create a society whereby everyone has the freedom to challenge authority, question, say or sing whatever they want, we will be creating an escape valve for the types of pressures which caused damage or even destroyed other nations. By allowing the people a freedom of speech, religion, to hold the press, assemble and to petition the government, the First Amendment, creates a free society where people can effectively solve emerging problems, question authority without

having any form of interference or control from the government. I believe that the First Amendment of the American Constitution is important to a free society.
