Gautam Malkani: Mixing and Matching Analysis Essay Example
Gautam Malkani, in his Financial Times article titled "Mixing and Matching" (published on April 22, 2006), delves into the formation of the desi subculture among British Asians in London. This subculture has allowed these individuals to feel a sense of belonging and contribution to British culture, as it transcends racial boundaries. The author explains that the desi subculture emerged as a result of Asian youths embracing a blend of diverse cultures in their effort to establish a distinct and confident identity, considering the prejudice they faced due to racial stereotypes. Additionally, Malkani suggests that boys raised by single mothers exhibit hyper-masculine traits potentially as a way to compensate for lacking paternal figures in their upbringing. Overall, the writer views culture as a representation of masculinity.
In his article, Gautam Malkani offers a refreshing perspective on multicultural i
...ntegration and its impact on British society. He highlights the groundbreaking relationship between masculinity and cultural prestige among British Asians in the United Kingdom. However, his argument has some limitations. His claim that boys raised by single mothers are more prone to aggression is oversimplified. In my view, this conclusion lacks validity as an individual's personality is shaped by various factors. Additionally, relying on his University Research Project as a case study raises concerns about the research's quality control.
I find the writer's concept of culture serving as a substitute for masculinity inappropriate in today's climate of promoting national unity and tolerance among the British people. However, reading and reflecting on this paper has allowed me to recognize the impact of culture on fostering cohesion and peaceful coexistence within a nation composed of diverse cultures.
