The first expression exhibition occurred in 1874.
Even though the idea emerged from Cloud Monet, much credit has gone to Degas who is mainly accountable for the organization of the initial Impressionist exhibition. Subsequent to the debates, the artistes such as Monet, Degas, Morisot, Boudin, Sisley, Cézanne, and Pissarro chose to refer to themselves as Société Anonyme des Artistes. The group had artistes who were painters, printmakers, and sculptures.
On April 15, 1874, the exhibition opened in Paris within the 35 Boulevard des Capucines. The exhibitions occurred on the floor top and initial studio of photographer the Gaspard-Félix Tournachon or Nadar (Harris & Zucker, 2013). The photographer had many artist friends and mostly known for the portrait of the Parisian literali. Even though people attended the first Impressionist exhibition, several criticisms emerged.
Degas, Renoir, Monet and company sho
...cked people by their raw, ill-defined, and unblended paint. However, people expected to see polished illusions of the Salon painters. According to Joseph Vincent, the painter needs to understand the colours; however, the artists failed to draw better. T
he satirical magazine, Le Charivari , that Joseph Vincent worked for managed to realize the impression but failed to understand the representation of countless black tongue-lickings within the picture’s lower part (Nochlin, 1966). From the picture, the artists had an impression of sunrise. Joseph saw people walking along and the artistes asked similar question if the publisher saw them walking along Boulevard Capucines which according to Joseph, the artistes were making fun of him. It went on, ever more in a sarcastic manner. The article was referred to as “Exhibition of the Impressionists,” and for many years, the term has never changed. From such time, these
artists were identified as Impressionists.
