Torres Strait Islanders refers to the native inhabitants of the Torres Islands. These Islands are found in Queensland, Australia. The Torres Strait Islanders are genetically and culturally Melanesian.

This group of the Australian population is culturally unique from other Aboriginal individuals of Australia. Apart from Torres Strait Island, other regions that are inhabited by this community are Seisia and Bamaga mainland.

They have a unique and complex culture which is a mixture of Australian, Austronesian as well as Papuan elements. Torres Strait Islanders are seafaring people. Also, they make business transactions with the inhabitants of Papua New Guinea. Linguistic, archaeological history evidence reveals that the dominant culture of Torres Straight Island is Papua-Australia.

Torres Strait Islanders are governed by a political system of elected councils. The system is based on both mission management system and traditional local government (Shnukal, 2011). One of the notable Islanders is Christine Anu, who is both an actress and pop music singer. This community can easily fit in my community because we share a common religion. Since they are Christians, integration of these people in Christian community will be easy.
