Each of these Leadership Development Exercises focuses on one or two particular levers that a leader can use to achieve success. All of these exercises must be completed individually. These exercises will challenge you to use the concepts presented in the course to analyze a business case - Webster Industries (provided in your Course packet). When completing each of these exercises you should refer to this case for your analysis. Your answers to exercises I and II must NOT exceed 2 double-spaced pages with 12 point font and 1” margins. Your answers to exercises III and IV must NOT exceed 3 double-spaced pages with 12 point font and 1” margins. Be advised that any arguments made beyond the exercise page limit (however meritorious) will bear NO fruit. I will not read nor consider such text when grading your exercise.

Leadership Development Exercise: Decision-Making Due Date: April 11 (2 page limit)

The case suggests that the performance evaluation data (PAS, personnel audit, and the impressions and opinions of the group members) had several problems. From the perspective of decision-making biases, analyze how the characteristics of the performance data were likely to affect the decisions made by the Carter group. In your analysis, cite specific problems with the data and how they relate to the decision-making biases that we discussed in class.

Imagine that you are the home furnishings production manager – the Carter group has decided that it is in the company’s interest to terminate your position. Clearly, it is in your personal interest to keep your job. Assume that you have an opportunity to convince the Carter group that they have made the wrong decision. How would you convince them of their error? Describe what influence tactics you would use.

Leadership Development: Teams and Networks Due Date: May 23 (3 page limit)

Analyze the problems with the group and network processes the Carter group faced when formulating a workforce reduction strategy. In your written analysis, cite particular problems from the case and how they relate to specific mismanaged group and networking strategies. What potential changes in the network structure of the group or in the group processes could have been implemented to overcome these problems?

Leadership Development: Culture and Motivation Due Date: May 30 (3 page limit)
