The Afdarjung tomb (28 35’N and 77 12’E) is situated on Aurobindo Marg near Safdarjung Airport, opposite Jor Bagh in New Delhi. It is a garden tomb housed within a marble mausoleum, built by Nawab Shuja-Ud Daulah, son of Mirza Muquim Abul Mansur khan known as Safdarjung. This tomb represents the final period of Mughal architecture. The site contains four water canals that lead to various smaller Pavilions like Jangli Mahal or the forest palace, Moti Mahal or the pearl palace, and Badshah Pasand or the king’s favorite. Furthermore, there is also a madrasa within the complex. Above the main gateway stands a library maintained by the archeological survey of India.
The mausoleum is double-storeyed and constructed using red and buff sandstone slabs adorned with marble. It is located in the center of the garden and is elevated o
...n a 3.048 m (10ft.) high platform above the garden level. The primary tomb is approximately 18.28m (59.97) square and is fronted by a verandah with arched openings that lead to a series of inner cells. The central chamber of the mausoleum is square in shape and is surrounded by eight apartments. Four of these apartments have an octagonal shape while the remaining four are rectangular. The main chamber of the tomb contains a single cenotaph.
The underground chamber contains two graves, possibly Safdarjung and his wife Khujista Bano Begum's. Measuring about 18.28m (60ft) square and with a height of approximately 27.43m (90ft), the grave structure is prominent. Inside, there is a beautifully carved marble grave located in a square room measuring 6.096m (20ft). The ceiling of the room features intricate incised and plaster wor
decorations. Additionally, there is an arcaded pavilion on a raised platform at the center of the northern enclosure wall. This pavilion displays late-Mughal characteristics similar to those seen on the south and east sides.
A raised podium in front of the southern side of the mausoleum holds an arcaded pavilion, reminiscent of Moti Mahal. The pavilion features magnificent ceilings adorned with stunning sandstone geometric patterns.
