The Philippines is ranked 11th globally among the top fishing nations, with an annual yield of around US$2.5 billion. The country's fishermen use traditional and low-cost techniques such as net fishing from small boats and fish corrals, which are stationary pens that trap fish in coastal fishing grounds. These methods have traditionally provided sustenance for small-scale fishermen and their families. Net fishing, where a thin thread is knotted together to form meshes, is the main commercial fishing method, although longlining, trolling, dredging, and traps are also used.

In fishing, other countries employ contemporary techniques.

A Fishing Vessel is a boat or ship used for fishing in the sea, lake, or river. There are different types of vessels used for commercial, artisanal, and recreational fishing. According to the FAO, the

re are currently (2004) around four million commercial fishing vessels. Out of these, approximately 1.3 million are decked vessels with enclosed areas. Almost all of these decked vessels are mechanised and over 40,000 weigh more than 100 tons. In contrast, two-thirds (1.8 million) of the undecked boats are traditional sail and oar-powered craft that artisan fishers use.

The number of recreational fishing boats is difficult to estimate, but it is high. These boats are versatile because they are often used for fishing as well. Unlike commercial fishing vessels, recreational fishing boats are not solely dedicated to fishing. Any boat that can stay afloat and is occasionally used by a fisher to catch fish can be considered a recreational fishing boat. There is a wide range of boats used for recreational fishing, including dugout canoes, kayaks, rafts, pontoon boats, small dingies, runabouts, cabin

cruisers, cruising yachts, and large big game rigs. Larger boats specifically designed for recreational fishing usually have spacious open cockpits at the stern which make fishing convenient.

Angling, an ancient method of fishing with a hook, involves attaching the hook to a line. Sometimes a sinker is added to make it sink in the water. This classic setup, known as "hook, line and sinker," is commonly used in angling. Bait fish or lures are often used as bait on the hook. Fishing rods with reels are typically used to cast the line, although alternative methods like fishing kites, cannons, kontiki rafts, and remote controlled devices can also be employed to project the line. Floats can be utilized to set the line and indicate bites. Angling not only serves as a popular sport fishing technique but also finds application in commercial fisheries where multiple hooks (e.g., longlining or commercial trolling) are frequently employed.

3.Line fishing - fishing line refers to a cord specifically designed for fishing. The length, material, and weight of the fishing line are important factors to consider (as thicker lines are more easily spotted by fish). When choosing a fishing line for a particular fishing environment, factors such as breaking strength, knot strength, UV resistance, castability, limpness, stretch, abrasion resistance, and visibility play a role. Nowadays, fishing lines are predominantly made from synthetic materials. The most prevalent type is monofilament, which consists of a single strand. Additionally, there are braided fishing lines and thermally fused superlines available.

Electrofishing, primarily used in freshwater by fisheries scientists, is a newly developed technique that utilizes electricity to stun fish for

easy capture. This method is commonly employed in scientific surveys to sample fish populations for abundance, density, and species composition. When performed properly, electrofishing does not cause any lasting harm to the fish, as they return to their normal state shortly after being stunned.
