The Gilded Age was a period of history in the late 19th century, from roughly 1870 to 1900. During this time, America experienced a boom in economic growth and industrialization as it emerged from the American Civil War and completed its transition to an urban-industrialized economy. The era is known for its vast fortunes created by robber barons such as John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and J. P Morgan; however it was also a period of great inequality between the wealthy and poor classes which led to social unrest and agitation for reform.The phrase Gilded Age comes from Mark Twain’s 1873 novel The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today which satirizes the greed and corruption that was rampant during this period. This age saw rapid expansion in industry with steel production more than doubling between 1880-1900 while transportation networks were extended throughout America with railroads connecting distant cities across regions. Inventions like the telephone revolutionized communication while new consumer products became widely available at prices lower than ever before due to increased competition among businesses thanks to new technologies like mass production methods or corporate mergers.At the same time, workers faced dangerous working conditions often earning less than subsistence wages due to intense competition for jobs coupled with labor unions being unable or unwilling to protect them adequately; meanwhile women faced similar hardships but with even fewer rights or opportunities available despite some progress being made towards greater suffrage rights by organizations like National Women Suffrage Association (NWSA) founded by Susan B Anthony in 1869 . Additionally there were numerous examples of political corruption ranging from grafts on public works projects funded through taxes collected from citizens used largely without their consent (the Tweed Ring scandal is one example) all the way up to presidents such as Ulysses S Grant whose administration has been described as rife with scandals”. Overall, although the Gilded Age brought about unprecedented wealth for some individuals who took advantage of modern technologies and business practices during this era it was also marked by extreme inequality between rich & poor classes resulting in widespread poverty alongside government corruption which ultimately laid foundation for progressive reforms implemented later on during Progressive Era that followed afterwards beginning around 1890s – 1910s .
