1.) Jovita Carranza demonstrated major skills in her career at UPS that made her a successful leader such as the fact that she “accepted all opportunities that presented themselves…” (Hughes, 2009 pg. 82). Experience in this case helped Jovita work her way to the top. Perception of experience affects the course of action one would take to become a good leader. Furthermore, Carranza’s corporate achieves within the UPS company made her a success. In addition her drive, innovate approach and determination made her named Hispanic Business Magazines Women of the Year (Hughes, 2009 pg. 80).
Moreover, Carranza’s engagement with UPS employees helped her develop necessary teambuilding skills that furthered her career. She encouraged the company to be more courteous to their employee wants and needs. She was a great advocate of diversity,
...loyalty and responsibility for UPS. Carranza’s dedication to her job and her length of employment at UPS made her become familiar with the aspects of leadership, which in turn, made her, become a successful leader.
2.) Jovita Carranza motivation got her to the top of the UPS chain. “Carranza attributes much of her success to her eagerness to take on new challenges” (Hughes, 2009 pg. 81). Carranza’s career grew from the lowest rank employee at UPS to the “president of the Americas Region” (Hughes, 2009 pg. 81). Because Carranza started as a bottom level employee she has a better understanding of the wrath that lower level workers endure and can sympathize with the issues that arise.
3.) The skills and characteristics that make a successful leader showed in Highlight 2.1 of the textbook Leadership: Enhancing the Lessons of
Experience and the skills that Carranza has in common start with “the ability to be influential and persuasive with different groups” (Hughes, 2009 pg. 46). Carranza seems to be able to connect and get through to people. She has been promoted and moved to countless places around the United States for UPS and has had to deal with many different groups of people. Furthermore, she has “the ability to manage in an environment of diversity-managing people from different cultures, gender, generations, etc” (Hughes, 2009 pg. 46). Moreover, Carranza proves that she has “the ability to delegate effectively” (Hughes, 2009 pg. 46). In addition, Carranza shows that she is capable of learning from her experiences.
