In the modern society, entrepreneurs play a significantly important role in promoting the economic development within this competitive global market. According to Kuratlko (2009) pointed out:” The entrepreneur is one who undertakes to organize, manage, and assume the risks of a business”, which means, entrepreneurs are the individuals who can convert the opportunities which have been recognized into workable ideas; create economic profit via investing time, money, labour, capital; be responsible for the risks that they may encounter in the future; and have a reasonable prediction for the payoff.
Therefore, due to the particularity and importance of the entrepreneurs, some reviewers believe that people should judge whether he or she is an entrepreneur by the process of how they becoming an entrepreneur, not the nature which is equipped with them when they were born,
...while others consider entrepreneurs are born with the entrepreneurial knack. In this essay, I would discuss this topic by giving evidence of supporting each of the view from different perspectives.
The discussion which would be mentioned in the next section includes firstly, corporate experience, which is followed by entrepreneurship education experience, then, natural-born quality and the age of starting the first venture. Finally, a conclusion would be drawn. First and foremost, it is believed that the single entrepreneurship gene does not exist in the reality. Just like Gordon (2010) said:” Entrepreneurship is not genetic. It has nothing to do with your chromosomes or inherited traits.
They make things happen because of their own will and skill and knowledge”, which means, an individual has to understand he or she possesses a desire to be an entrepreneur and
he should recognize the responsibilities and risks. However, there are various forms of experience which can make individuals choose the path of entrepreneurship and, more importantly, he or she can achieve success in the long run. To be more detailed, experience in a corporate environment is one of the most vital factors that increase the opportunities of future entrepreneurial success. Because when people are mployed in firms, they may already have a promising prospect of career and be in a comfort zone, as most of the crucial decisions are made by the boss.
To become an entrepreneurial leader means a huge risk they should take and also a tough challenge they should face. Therefore, it is difficult for them to transfer their previous working position to a risking one. In this case, prior experience which they gain early in their career is extremely significant, and it is completely valuable and meaningful, because he is more competent when compared to a people who are not experienced.
Additionally, it is indisputable that the experience of entrepreneurship education and training contributes to entrepreneurial success. Because as Thomas and Kelley (2011) stated:” The clear priority of entrepreneurship education is to focus on developing entrepreneurial attitudes, skills and behaviors”, entrepreneurship education can provide people with life skills which are necessary in this rapidly changing society.
For instance, the education can teach individuals how to build self-confidence and self-efficacy. Meanwhile, people’s willingness to take risks and the ability to come up with a solution when facing a difficulty could be cultivated during this process. On the contrary, there is no doubt that entrepreneurship is not just about understanding
business ideas and management knowledge. Some outstanding entrepreneurs really had a drive to build, discover and innovate since they were a child.
For example, Steve Jobs, who started preparing for his venture while he was still in high school, felt innately passionate about doing at that time. In terms of this, it is understandable that some people believe that although higher education contributes to form their entrepreneurial mindset, entrepreneurs can benefits far more from innate drive. In other words, without intelligence to come up with a new idea or organize a business situation, they are unlikely to be entrepreneurs.
Moreover, there is one other natural-born quality may lead to entrepreneurs are different from most ordinary people, this is, the high needs for control and recognition. Because people who possess this kind of personality are not willing to be controlled by others, therefore he or she hopes to seek for a wider space to reach to the higher achievements. Furthermore, according to the report of ERNST&YOUNG, the data indicated a large majority of the respondents, who are successful entrepreneurs, reported that they started their first ventures when they were young.
And also, there are 685 leading entrepreneurial leaders were interviewed for this report among this survey, more importantly, more than half of them started their first firm before the age of 30. Obviously, that information demonstrates that people who have not been educated much through professional entrepreneurship course or who do not have rich employee experience, still, could be successful entrepreneurs due to particular character traits or intelligence. From what has been examined carefully above, it is hard to say entrepreneurs are only
can be made but cannot be born unilaterally.
Because just like Bolton and Thompson (2004) stated that:” There is no clear correlation between the achievement motivation and the level of performance achieved, other factors, most notably talent, have to be there as well”, making an entrepreneur is credited to both personality and experience. In other words, intelligence of entrepreneurial knack can impact on the development of becoming an entrepreneur without doubt, but, more importantly, the necessary skills, attitudes and approaches could only be gained through experience.
On the other hand, nature and nurture cannot be separated if one aims to be a successful entrepreneur. Because nature can equip individuals with passion, adventure spirit, persistence, creativity and confidence, meanwhile, nurture can train people to be skillful, competent and powerful. In this way, an entrepreneur can figure out the best conceivable opportunity and then make it achievable. Also, entrepreneurs can provide the team members with a bright and profitable future in the long run.
