The Massachusetts Bay, and the Chesapeake region were both part of the New World where England was starting to colonize. Even though the people from these two locations originated from the same land (England), these colonies turned out to be extremely different from one another. They differed in the reason they settled the land, the economic activity of the region, and the demographics of the colonies.
II. Motives for Settlement
- 1. Captain John Smith settled Chesapeake Region. Massachusetts Bay settled by John Winthrop.
- 2. John Winthrop- Led puritans who were separatists out of England. This was to achieve a religious freedom they could not have anywhere else. This was their "city upon a hill" God wanted them to have
- 3. Chesapeake more for economic reasons. Settle there to grow tobacco and worry more about individual self than others

III. Economic Activity
- 1. New England did not have many slaves or a high black population. Around 1 . 7% of their population was black and there was barely any manual labor
- 2. Chesapeake region had more of a black population, but still not a very high amount of slaves. Only 4. 8% of the population was black. These two regions did not concentrate too much on leaver as the West Indies did
- 3.Chesapeake concentrated on farming tobacco, and concentrated more on their own problems. Massachusetts relied more on building of ships or materials instead of farming a specific crop
IV. Demographics
- 1. This was comparing New England and Chesapeake. They were different in size, Massachusetts was much smaller. Both had a large amount of white population, that was basically the same (around 33,000)

I. Intro Thesis:
Virginia found great profit in the use of their staple crop, tobacco. This was what every Virginian plantation owner had his or her life revolve around. The success wasn't Just limited to the Americas; Europe also found great pleasure in Tobacco. Tobacco greatly affected the labor that they used, the places where they set up their limitations, and the way they interacted with the Native Americans.
II. Interactions with Native Americans
- 1. Native Americans originally taught the first immigrants how to farm tobacco
- 2. More Europeans started arriving after the huge success which forced numerous Native Americans to flee their homeland, or be killed off by European diseases they had no immunity to
- 3. Indians resisted and were not very good laborers
- 4. Phaeton War was a resistance of the Native Americans
III. Labor
- 1. The great majority of people who came to Virginia were indentured servants who were around our age (16-24). These people had hopes to become great farmers, but usually never made it to that part of their life
- 2.The land required a lot of work, Indentured Servants worked to death
- 3. They didn't want to buy African Slaves because that cost too
much. Native Americans would resist their control
IV. Land
- 1. Virginians original settlement in Jamestown was way too marshy
- 2. Found greater use around huge plantations across rivers where the farms would be kind of like a house in a neighborhood with the road connecting them be a river
- 3. Unlike the very supportive Massachusetts Bay, Virginian planters were extremely competitive. They hoped other planters crops would get ruined, so they would get paid more for their tobacco
- 4.This was their industry
V. Virginians greatly revolved around the use of tobacco.
It affected everything from the people that were brought over to Virginia and the type of way that the land was used to their interactions with Native Americans. After PUSH class notes
