Hate speech on social media has existed in our lives for a long time; consequently, there is almost no social media user in the world who has never been exposed to hate speech so far. Users can encounter this type of speech that attacks one's values, such as religion, race, gender, etc. on their own direct message boxes or another person's comments frequently. Unfortunately, the number of hate speech that may result in disrupting a person's psychology has increased on a large scale nowadays. Although many of us cannot understand why a person chooses this way, there are various reasons behind a person's preference for hate speech.
The power of anonymity is one of the reasons which leads to hate speech. Psychologists revealed that anonymity increases aggression. When a
...person chooses to be anonymous, he thinks that he gets the right to say what he wants without any fear. He tends to write everything he thinks with the confidence of this fearlessness in a way that they cannot do in normal life. He may hate someone just because her beliefs and thoughts are different from his. Furthermore, he can also hate anyone whose life is more luxurious or whose physical appearance is better than his. As a result of such jealousy, anonyms choose to send insulting messages to anyone from behind the screen without being aware of their unethical behaviors.
A person's past with violence is the other reason for hate speech. People who have been exposed to violence in their lives and are used to solve their problems by fighting are more likely to demonstrate to other people the feelin
of hate. Because their level of tolerance towards the other person is low, they get angry more easily and react more quickly to an unpleasant situation for them. For example, while they are just discussing their ideas with other people in the social environment, they suddenly display embarrassing behaviors such as swearing. Their acts occur without thinking about how much they hurt the other person because it is the way that life teaches them.
In conclusion, factors such as anonymity and being involved in violence contribute to hate speech on social media. It is obvious that people have the right to speak freely. They can mention their ideas on social media without any permission. However, that does not mean there are not any ethical rules. The opinions, beliefs, lifestyles of other people must be respected. Hate speech based on people's values should be avoided. If these conditions are followed, freedom of ideas will have no problem.
