Beowulf refers to the single greatest narrative of the Old English literature. Moreover, it is one of the best epics of all time. Paradoxically, nobody can claim to be an author of this astounding example of literature. Just like any other epic heroes, Beowulf the following qualities make him an epic hero: exemplifying strength and bravery in fighting the dragons, sacrifice himself in order for the others to survive, and great leadership.
Grendel is, actually, a descendant of Cain. From the book description, he is a very scaly monster and without human qualities. Because of his ancestor’s sins, particularly Cain, God cast out the descendants of Cain. Therefore, Grendel is, forced to stay alone in dark, cold cave. Every night he hears Danes celebrate loudly in Heorot, this drives him crazy with anger and envy, thus making him to at
...tack the Danes.
Beowulf makes two powerful speeches between haring of last carnage and leaping into the water. Nevertheless, in his last speech, he requests Hrothgar to take good care and look for his men, in case he will be, killed in the battle with Grendel’s mother. This request reflects a close bond and mutual concern and love between the leader and his followers.
When his sword, which Unferth loaned to him, failed to penetrate the Grendel’s mother hide, Beowulf discovered a gigantic massive sword in a cave. He used this sword to kill Grendel’s mother.
Beowulf’s Strategy in Combating Gredel tells us a lot regarding his allegiance to warrior code. In Beowulf, it is necessary for the warriors to back up their words and boasts with immediate actions. Moreover, the fights are always to death with no retreat. Beowulf’
is ready to defend his people even with his life, thus showing strict adherence to warrior code.
After beheading Grendel’s mother, Beowulf also beheaded Grendel’s corpse. This was to ensure that the Monsters were fully dead and no way would they return to live. Moreover, bringing back the head of Grendel’s mother was proving to people that he had really killed the monster.
