As we approached the house, Manderley was completely consumed by fire. Maxim's expression of fear appeared to me as sadness, but I later learned it was a tear of joy as all memories of Rebecca were gone with the estate. When we arrived at the house, Mrs. Danvers leaned out of the window and exclaimed, "You killed my beloved Rebecca, so I will destroy your beloved Manderley!" Maxim muttered to himself, "That old house with so many bad memories means nothing to me."
Upon discovering that the house was a nightmare, a fireman yelled out for assistance in saving a woman named Mrs. Danvers. Despite being warned to leave her be, Maxim bravely rushed inside to rescue her. After several minutes of no sign of them, another firefighter emerged seeking help moving debris to free Mrs. Danvers. Concerned for M
...axim's safety, I feared that he may not make it out alive.
Upon hearing that a woman was with him, I immediately assumed it was Maxim's tormentor, Mrs. Danvers, who set fire to the place and made his life miserable. However, when two firefighters emerged carrying Maxim out, I feared for his life. As they began resuscitating him, I noticed some movement but also saw a significant gash on his leg with blood gushing out. Maxim was transported to the hospital by ambulance with me alongside him. However, he lost consciousness mid-way and upon arrival at the hospital, doctors detected a broken bone in his neck.
Upon hearing the news of Maxim's broken neck, I was overcome with tears, fearing for his survival. The uncertainty of whether or not he would become paralyzed loomed for three agonizing days
as doctors monitored his progress. Thankfully, he steadily improved and the news of his recovery brought immense relief to both myself and the medical team. Although he was not yet fully healed and would require a year of recuperation, it was a relief that he had avoided permanent disability. In the midst of all this, Mrs Danvers remained unscathed as Maxim had protected her from harm during the accident that caused his injury. Instead, she suffered only minor cuts and scrapes. She eventually moved into a quaint countryside cottage with insurance funds from a previous fire she started. It was a strenuous year for Maxim and myself as we resided by the beach in a small cottage, but we persevered and eventually, Manderley was rebuilt a mile away from its former location to Maxim's delight.
We changed Manderley's name to Maxim's Lodge. In a newspaper, I discovered that a burglar had broken into Mrs. Danvers' new cottage and attempted to steal items purchased with insurance money from Maxim. Mrs. Danvers fought the burglar and was fatally stabbed. She lived alone in a remote cottage and was not found for a week. Since she had made our lives miserable at Manderley, I was not deeply affected by the news, but Maxim was perplexed by the circumstances. We grew old together over the years, but Maxim passed away at 87. I couldn't bear to live without him, so I moved back to Scotland to be with my family.
Although I made a decent profit selling the house, what I truly longed for were the memories of living there with Maxim.
