Katniss returned home, took a bath, and dressed in one of her mother's dresses. At the reaping, they separated by age and gender. The video of the dark days of the uprising in District 13, which led to the hunger games and showed the Capital's constant power, was shown. Effie Trinket, a woman from the Capitol who draws names for the hunger games, drew the first name from the girls' bowl and read it aloud. The name called was Primrose Everdeen. As Prim slowly made her way to the stage, Katniss panicked and ran to grab her sister. However, a guard stopped her before she could reach Prim. Out of fear, Katniss found herself yelling, "I VOLUNTEER... I volunteer as tribute!" Eventually, they allowed her to go and get Prim. Gal had to come to get Prim because she kept refusing to leave. Katniss slowly took her place on the stage. Then, the name was called for the boys and the name she pulled out was Peeta Mellark.

Despite the lack of volunteers, Katniss remembered a time when her family was starving and she was lying in the rain. She observed Peeta, who stepped outside with burnt bread and gifted her two loaves before returning to the bakery. Her anxiety lessened as she realized that she would eventually confront him in the Hunger Games. Following the anthem, a group of Peace Keepers

led them to the Justice Building for their goodbyes. Afterwards, they boarded a train bound for the capital where they prepared themselves for dinner upon departure.

Upon arriving at the dinner table, they noticed that Haymitch, a former winner of the hunger games, was absent. However, they still proceeded to eat. Eventually, Haymitch reappeared but unexpectedly vomited on the floor. In response, Katniss and Peeta assisted him to his room - specifically the bathroom where they turned on the shower. Despite Katniss' efforts to help clean him up, Peeta reassured her and suggested she depart. Following this suggestion, Katniss went to her room where she undressed and got into bed suspecting that Peeta's kindness was actually a ploy to manipulate her in the games and make her an easy target. The next morning, she woke up and headed to the dining hall for breakfast.

Haymitch agrees to stay sober and assist the group after the incident, on the condition that they don't disrupt his drinking. They all accept and catch sight of the Capitol as they pass through the tunnel, finally arriving at the train station. Their stylist immediately welcomes them, and they begin preparing for the ceremony. Later on, they accompany her to the remake center where she waits for her main stylist for approximately three hours. She is taken aback by how ordinary he appears in contrast to other citizens of the Capitol. He introduces himself and carefully evaluates her appearance.

Upon entering a room, they engage in conversation over lunch. After finishing their meal, he helps her get dressed. Once Cinna finishes applying her makeup, she joins Peeta at

the chariots where the other tributes have gathered. Both Cinna and Peeta's stylist explain their plan to use artificial fire to illuminate their outfits. As each chariot starts moving out one by one, it is finally their turn. Moving forward slowly, Katniss catches a glimpse of herself on the projector and admires how stunning she looks. Moments later, she feels Peeta's hand inching towards hers. Despite her initial hesitation, she eventually decides to hold his hand as they raise them high in the air, knowing it will enhance their appearance.

Upon hearing the chant of her name, Cinna's statement was proved true - she was indeed the girl on fire. The following day, during dinner, they discuss the ceremony and their game strategies. She seizes hold of a bow and arrow and endeavors to concentrate. Katniss takes aim and fires, but unfortunately misses her

intended target. The game makers find this amusing and dismiss her performance.

She attempts a second time and successfully hits the target, right in the heart. With excitement, a big smile appears on her face. However, her smile fades away when she realizes that the game makers didn't even notice her achievement. They were too preoccupied appreciating the roasted pig in front of them. Filled with anger, she directs her arrow towards the group of game makers and hits the apple in the pig's mouth dead center. The games makers are left speechless. To break the silence, Katniss says, "Thank you for your consideration." Without waiting to be dismissed, she walks away. After Katniss's departure, panic sets in.

When she entered the room for a meal, everyone was curious about Peeta and Katniss' actions. Peeta explained what he had done, and then attention turned to Katniss as she shared her own account. Most people reacted with exaggerated emotion, but Haymitch remained calm. He simply urged her to describe her actions before continuing to eat. Then it was time to assess the ratings of all the tributes individually by district. Eventually, it came to Peeta and Katniss' turn. The tributes are scored on a scale from 1 to 12, with Peeta receiving a rating of 8.

Surprisingly, Katniss's rating of 11 astounded him, but the crowd erupted in applause. The preparations for the interview began and Haymitch discussed how Katniss would captivate the audience. Cinna devoted most of his day to getting her ready. When she caught a glimpse of herself, she realized that she looked absolutely stunning. Upon arrival, she spotted Peeta and Haymitch;

a reminder from Haymitch reassured them that their friendship still remained intact. The interviews followed a pattern where girls went first and boys went last from each district. Eventually, it was finally time for Katniss's turn to be interviewed and she slowly made her way to her seat.

The interviewer was Caesar Flickerman. He inquired about her favorite aspect of the Capitol, to which she responded with appreciation for the lamb stew. This admiration continued throughout the interview. Before leaving, she witnessed Peeta's own interview and noticed his natural talent for speaking. However, as she listened closely, she heard something astonishing. Caesar asked Peeta if he had a special someone back in district 12. Initially denying it, Peeta eventually confessed his crush on a girl from his hometown. Caesar suggested that if Peeta emerged victorious in the hunger games, this girl would be compelled to go out with him.

Peeta claimed it wouldn't be useful, prompting Caesar to question why. Peeta clarified that it was because Katniss had joined him in this location. Katniss was left without words but filled with anger. Upon arrival at their destination, Katniss forcefully pushed Peeta, causing him to stumble and grasp the shattered pieces of an urn with his hands. Katniss proceeded to yell at him.

Haymitch, Effie, Cinna, and Portia entered the room and asked about the disturbance. After everything was explained, they all agreed that Katniss and Peeta would be presented as star-crossed lovers. They then sat down for dinner. The next day marked their arrival at the hunger games.

Each tribute is placed in a separate room with their stylist. Upon landing,

Katniss meets Cinna in their room. After getting ready and eating some food, Cinna gives his final words. Katniss then enters the cylinder and is lifted up with the other tributes on their metal plates. A voice announces, "Ladies and gentlemen, let the Seventy-fourth Hunger Games begin!" The tributes must wait for 60 seconds before they can start running. Katniss notices the bow and arrow, but Peeta's expression tells her not to go for it. He silently pleads, "Don't go for the bow and arrow... DON'T, NO."

The gong sounds and she realizes that she missed her opportunity, so she chooses the first thing she spots. She grabs the backpack that she had to compete for with a boy from district 9. Once she has it, she heads into the woods. After finding a spot, she notices the absence of water, so she settles into a tree. From there, she observes the number of children who died that day and starts to wonder about Peeta's fate since he is still alive. The following day, she searches for food then takes a nap, only to be awakened by a snapping sound. She discovers a fire and deduces that another tribute must have started it.

While observing a group of careers, it becomes evident that they have formed an alliance with the goal of eliminating the tribute who started the fire. The protagonist listens to their conversation and overhears them discussing the importance of finding her. Suddenly, she is startled by another voice which turns out to be Peeta's. Curiosity leads her to eavesdrop on their discussion about why they haven't killed him yet. The

leader from district 2 explains that he is their only way to locate her. She understands that they believe they can track and eliminate her if she goes searching for him. Her instincts tell her to ignore him completely. Once they leave, she prepares a rabbit for a meal and after eating half of it, she embarks on a search for water.

After an extensive search, she eventually finds a bush of berries. Yet upon closer examination, she realizes that the juice bears a deep red hue resembling blood. She decides to discard the berries and continues her journey. Climbing a tree, she scans for any sign of water but only sees an endless expanse of trees. Exhausted, she collapses to the ground and seeks refuge by climbing into another tree where she falls asleep. Upon awakening, she experiences joint pain with every movement. As she tumbles onto the ground, she can feel mud beneath her and remembers the scent in the air.

Suddenly, the protagonist realizes the proximity of a pond. She hurriedly crawls into the pond and drinks as much water as she can. She then fills her jug with water before seeking refuge in a nearby tree. Some hours pass, and she awakens to the sound of frantic feet running. She gazes upwards and perceives the source of their panic—an approaching forest fire. Acting swiftly, she descends from the tree, gathers her belongings, and flees. Amidst her escape, she ponders whether the game makers are responsible for this destructive blaze. Running vigorously, she seeks shelter on a stone to catch her breath, only to narrowly evade a fireball that strikes

the spot where she was previously lying.

While running away, Katniss narrowly escapes a fireball and hurts her calf. Eventually, she is seen by the group of career tributes. To avoid them, she quickly climbs a tree and waits for their attack. However, when one tribute tries to climb up after her, they are unable to due to their weight. Realizing that they can't chase her any further, Katniss proceeds to mock and taunt them. Later that night, as they sleep near the tree and make a fire, Katniss sees a pair of eyes watching her. At first thinking it's an animal, upon closer inspection she recognizes the young girl from District 11.

Rue catches Katniss's attention, pointing at something above her head: a trackerjacker nest. Katniss decides to wait until morning to remove it. Returning to her sleeping bag, she discovers something waiting for her - a sponsor gift. Opening it, she finds burn medicine, which brings relief as she applies it to her wound. Afterward, she falls asleep and wakes up to find her leg nearly healed. She gets up and begins sawing the branch with the nest.

During the process, the protagonist is stung by three trackerjackers. However, the nest eventually collapses, causing the careers to flee. One of the tributes, named Glimmer, dies from the trackerjacker stings. When Katniss descends from the tree, she discovers that the deceased tribute possessed a bow and arrows. She seizes them, feeling a wave of relief wash over her. Shortly after obtaining the weapon, she starts experiencing hallucinations. Suddenly, Peeta emerges from a blur, limping and shouting at her to escape. He

pushes her and although she manages to run for a short distance, she eventually collapses and loses consciousness on a log.

When Katniss woke up, she felt relieved as the hallucinations and venom had both left her system. She noticed Rue, a small person, standing behind a tree. Rue came forward and explained how she had helped remove the venom from Katniss' bites. They gathered some food, ate, and then devised a plan to weaken the careers. They realized that the careers needed one thing: food. Together, they made a plan to eliminate all of the careers' food. They also created a signal to communicate that they were both okay. Katniss ventured towards the location of the careers as part of their plan.

Rue and Katniss worked together to execute their plan. Rue prepared the distraction while Katniss took action by shooting her arrow at the bag of apples. The intention was to trigger the buried mines, causing them to explode and destroy all of their food. After waiting for Rue's signal, Katniss launched her arrow, resulting in a powerful explosion that threw her to the ground and left her unable to hear in her left ear. Despite this setback, she managed to regain her composure and assured Rue that she was safe. As Katniss hurried through the forest, she eagerly anticipated a reply from Rue but received none. Overwhelmed with panic, fear began to consume her.

After an extensive search, she finally heard Rue's signal, indicating that she was safe. Determined, she followed the sound until suddenly she was startled by a horrifying scream - a child's scream that she recognized as Rue's.

Frantically, she called out Rue's name until she got a response. In return, Rue called out Katniss's name, leading Katniss to her location. Tragically, Katniss found Rue trapped in a net, which had been set up by another tribute. Acting quickly, Katniss freed Rue from the net and embraced her, but in the midst of this rescue, the tributary who had set the trap attempted to harm Katniss by throwing a spear. However, Katniss skillfully evaded the attack and retaliated by killing him with an arrow. Unfortunately, Rue was not as fortunate.

When Katniss turned around, she witnessed the spear he had thrown piercing Rue's body. After witnessing the incident, Katniss gently laid Rue on the ground and Rue asked her if she had blown up the food, urging her to win. In a touching moment, Rue requested Katniss to sing to her, and she complied until the sound of the cannon signaled Rue's death. Determined to demonstrate that Rue's life held significance, Katniss adorned her body with flowers, fully aware that the cameras were capturing every moment. Rising to her feet, Katniss raised three fingers as a tribute to Rue and a symbol of the lost loved one.

After departing and finding a seat, Katniss ascended a tree while shedding tears. At that moment, the game makers made an announcement, informing her of a change in the games' rules. It was now feasible for two victors to emerge from the same district. Upon learning this information, Katniss impulsively exclaimed Peeta's name before swiftly recognizing her error and muffling her mouth. Despite feeling exhilarated, she descended from the tree cautiously and resolved to

postpone her search for Peeta until morning. The following day marked the commencement of her mission to locate him.

During her search for him, she spotted a track of blood and tracking it brought her to the lake where a familiar voice - Peeta's - reached her ears. Initially, he was unseen but eventually Peeta disclosed his cunning disguise that allowed him to blend seamlessly into a large rock. She provided assistance by assisting him in getting up, cleaning his wounds, and examining a deep gash on his upper left leg. Upon confessing that he had gone without food for several days, she offered him dried apples as sustenance. Realizing the extent of his illness, she resolved to tend to her own injury as well.

After removing his shoes, socks, and pants, she evaluates the seriousness of the injury. The cut is deep, bleeding, and filled with pus while his leg appears swollen. Attempting to cleanse the wound by pouring water over it proves counterproductive. In an effort to aid in his recovery, she provides him with dry fruit for consumption and proceeds to wash the rest of his garments. Additionally, she chews on certain leaves known for their infection-fighting properties before applying them onto the wound. This action effectively helps drain the pus from his leg, which she interprets as a positive indication. Following a thorough cleaning of his attire accompanied by some rest time given to him, they embark on a quest to find a new settlement location. Eventually stumbling upon what seems like a cave-shaped structure prompts them to select it as their newfound refuge.

She kisses him and

then goes outside where she notices that Haymitch has left him some broth. She wakes him up with a series of kisses and then feeds him the broth sent by Haymitch. After they finish the broth, they go back to sleep. The next morning, she fetches some berries and upon her return, she finds him awake and about to search for her. She sits him down and feeds him the berries before he tells her to rest and makes her sleep. When she wakes up, she realizes how long she slept but it holds no importance as she tends to his minor wounds and his cut.

Upon seeing it, her heart sank as the pus had disappeared, but the swelling had worsened, causing his skin to tighten with red streaks spreading up his leg - a clear indication of blood poisoning. He was aware of his condition, and although she did not want to talk about it, she prepared some soup for him. However, he declined the food but expressed interest in hearing a story. She proceeded to recount the time when she acquired a goat for her younger sister, Prims. Meanwhile, an announcement was made regarding a forthcoming feast, necessitating each tribute to provide something that would be placed in the center of the arena the next day.

Katniss tells a lie, claiming she is not going, but he knows she is. He insists on going too if she goes. After agreeing, Katniss goes to clean herself up and discovers a sponsor gift from Haymitch. Initially excited, she realizes it's not the medicine she expected but a small bottle of sleeping syrup.

To deceive him, Katniss mixes the syrup with berries and feeds it to him. As he eats, he finds the berries incredibly sweet and soon realizes their dangerous contents, yet it is already too late. He starts losing consciousness while Katniss watches, seeing the expression on his face and feeling the weight of her unforgivable action.

After collecting her belongings, she went to get the medicine. When she arrived, she spent some time observing the area. Suddenly, the girl from district 5 rushed out, grabbed her bag, and left quickly. Intrigued by this, Katniss approached the bag only to be attacked by Clove who used a knife to strike her down and force her onto the ground. Clove revealed their plan to kill Rue. Soon after, Thresh, Rue's fellow tribute from their district, intervened and took hold of Clove while angrily questioning her actions. Clove called out Cato's name and he responded by shouting back at her. However, Thresh immediately began attacking Clove with a stone until her head became indented.

He glances at Katniss and says, "I'll let you go this time for Rue." Katniss hurries back to the cave, administers the shot to Peeta, and promptly loses consciousness. When she wakes up, Peeta appears relieved and watches her with concern. They finish the remaining food, settle down, and engage in conversation. Katniss questions him about when he started developing feelings for her. He recounts the entire story of how he first noticed her when she was only 5 years old and how he would regularly observe her walking home after singing in music class. Just as they are about to share

a kiss, a noise startles them. Peeta goes outside and discovers that Haymitch has sent them a feast to enjoy.

After they eat and talk a little more, Peeta informs Katniss that Thresh has died. Peeta comforts Katniss before they go to sleep, and the following day, they go hunting and gathering. Before Katniss departs from Peeta, she instructs him to search for roots and berries. While hunting, Katniss returns to where she left Peeta and notices that the apple and cheese have disappeared. Upon finding him, she angrily accuses him of eating the food, but he denies it and reveals that the berries he found were toxic. Suddenly, a cannon fires, and they spot the lifeless body of the girl from district 5, realizing that she consumed the poisonous berries and food.

After a brief conversation, they realize that Fox Face's death did not benefit them. With Cato now knowing about her demise, he will come after them. So, they decide to find another place to stay. They gather their things and go on a journey to find a suitable location but end up at the cave. However, instead of hiding inside, they choose to wait openly for Cato's arrival. As he comes near, Katniss sees him running towards them with protective gear on. To her surprise, he passes by them without stopping. In that moment, she notices a creature chasing him and sees at least six more nearby. Driven by self-preservation instincts, Katniss runs away with the intention of saving herself.

As Katniss is running, she turns around with the memory that she left Peeta with his bad leg. Thus,

she grabs him and follows Cato to the Cornucopia. Together, they climb to the top where Cato informs them that the creatures possess the ability to climb as well. Upon gazing down at the mutts, Katniss recognizes distinctive features on one of them - blonde hair, green eyes, and the number 1 on its collar. It dawns on her that it's Glimmer. She continues scanning the other mutts and observes that all of them were tributes who had died. Among them, she spots a small one with curly brown fur and big brown eyes - unmistakably Rue.

When Katniss pulls Peeta up, Cato grabs hold of him. To save Peeta, Katniss points her arrow at Cato and threatens to shoot him. However, Cato warns that if she shoots him, Peeta will die too. Nevertheless, Katniss manages to shoot Cato's hand while also saving Peeta from falling. Because of his armor, it takes a while for Cato to fall into the pack of mutts, causing him immense suffering. In order to end his misery, Katniss shoots an arrow at Cato's head. As a result, the mutts scatter quickly. Their relief and joy is short-lived when they hear an announcement stating that the rules have returned to normal: only one victor can survive. While Peeta suggests sacrificing himself as the victor, Katniss has a different plan in mind.

Retrieving the night lock she had saved, she declared that they would both perish. After counting to three, before consuming the night lock, the announcer interrupted and proclaimed them as winners of the Seventy-fourth annual Hunger Games. Boarding the hovercraft, Katniss clung tightly onto Peeta but he

collapsed unconscious upon reaching it. They transported him to a table and began treating his injured leg. They placed Katniss behind a door where she screamed until landing; then they injected her with a needle. When she woke up, she found herself in a room devoid of visible windows or doors.

After realizing her hearing in her left ear has returned and her wounds and scars have disappeared, she is granted freedom. Soon after, she discovers that Peeta is also unharmed and gets ready for a final interview with Cinna. To appear more innocent during the interview, Cinna selects a yellow dress, flats, and a headband. During their meeting, Haymitch informs her that the Capitol is furious because she outshone them in the arena. He advises her to claim that she was so deeply in love that she had no control over her actions. Agreeing with his advice, she embraces this role.

Upon stepping onto the stage, she immediately spotted Peeta and rushed into his embrace, initiating a fervent kiss. Caesar then instructed them to start the show. After the interview, President Snow awarded them with medals. However, despite his smiling facade, his eyes were brimming with unwavering fury. The following day brought another interview that showcased footage of Peeta and Katniss in the cave. It was during this time that Katniss discovered about Peeta's new artificial leg. Overwhelmed by guilt, she held herself responsible for what had transpired. Following the conclusion of the interview, they strolled alongside the train.

When Haymitch instructed them to continue doing well, Peeta was uncertain of its meaning. Katniss then informed him that Haymitch had advised

her to pretend to be in love with him. This infuriated Peeta, causing him to storm back to the train. However, just before they arrived at District 12, he requested Katniss to do it one more time for the cameras. Although his tone was not angry, it lacked sincerity. In response, Katniss tightly grasped his hand, dreading the eventual moment when she would have to let go.
